Show me your shooting shack!

I have recently moved to a place where I can do some shooting out back. I have a place leveled off for a shack and I have berms at 40 and 80 yards (I could have got more but I was opting for maximum safety and noise containment). My concept for the shack is something like a 10' by 10' cabin with a peaked roof and a 10' x 6' porch on the front. The bench would likely be on the porch. This shack would have windows on all sides and double as a hunting blind for coyotes and deer.

I would like to see how other people have their shooting shacks set up. Did you buy something pre-built or prefab? Did you get plans from somewhere? How much did you spend? I am OK as a carpenter but starting from a plan is definitely easier.

I have a friend who has one, its his reloading room,
and shootin shack. Raise the rear window, and shoot
upto 100 yds. It doesnt get any better, unless you could
have more yardage. I have the reloading building, 12x16,
but unfortunately no room for the range. LDS

Shooting out a window would be SO much fun but I sold the farm and got married. Now, I'd be stapling targets to the neighbors siding to do it.
Take a look at the prebuilt sheds. Can't beat the cost of them. I'm a retired builder and "volunteer" to help the Church, community and friends. I've done estimates on small out buildings for people. The prebuilts usually came in at a little more than my cost for just the materials. I'd pour a concrete pad for the shooting side of the shack, under your "porch roof" and put a concrete bench on it.I'd also make it 12x15 or 20. Ya need room for a loading bench, indoor shooting bench and a wood stove.:) Check them out. Josh

As joshb said, go with a prebuilt. I am a contractor too and I can't compete price wise with the prebuilt sheds/barns. They must buy enough material in quantity that they can build them less expensive. And you'll probably fill 10 x 10 pretty quick. I'd try to go bigger. The room in my house is 9 x 10 and no where near big enough.....

A local high school shop class built 8'x8' wood shacks locally here and sold them for the price of materials used.It is built to local building codes. I paid $600.00 for mine and paid a flatbed tow truck $100.00 to deliver it to my range at my house . The building is wired and has outlets and a light in it. It is 200 yards from my house so I never wired it and now 10 years later I figure I don't need to as I don't shoot after dark. I cut a section of the wall out between the studs to poke the rifle barrel out and a 55 gallon drum set up 10 feet from the rifle port as a permanent home for my chronograph.Just take it from the shed to the barrel and it is ready to go.Back into the shed when done shooting. I used cinder blocks for the legs of the shooting bench and poured a cement top for it. It is about 4 inches thick and doesn't move when shooting.
The 8 x 8 size is fine for me as I don't load in that shack- just shoot from it. Low budget shooting range that works good for me for under a grand .
As the others have said I couldn't have bought the materials for that price.(The high school gets breaks on that stuff.) And with my great building skills it would have looked more like an outhouse than a nice shed.

All it needs is a wet bar, a kitchen and some young ladies to serve food and drinks.

It looks more like a top notch hunting stand than a shooting shack! :)

It was built for hunting, but, since the state sees fit to not give out any tags I have spent my time shooting steel!!

20121112_095747.jpg As far as the materials used. Used telephone poles. Used telephone pole cross beams. Used Bridging planks. Used plywood. Used telephone pole bolts and nuts to hold it all together. Used carpet. Started with used windows, but splearged and had some custom made. About all we have into it is the cost of the windows. By the way, the bench is made up of 4" thick bridge plank. Very crude, but works great!! I wish I had the pictures where the side windows were up. We simply pull a rope and they fold up and out like an airplane wing. 180++ degree shooting.
