Shoulder pain

My Shoulder is starting to bother me while bench rest shooting. What have you people done to help with this?
Maybe a vest with some sort of padding?
It's a pain. !

What caliber are you shooting?
Does the shoulder pain seem to come from hard kicking calibers, or could it be a neck issue that is aggravated by your shooting position?

Need more information to help.

Actually I don't have a hard recoil rifle. My 6ppc recoils the most because of it's lighter weight. The pain is in the top of my arm at the shoulder joint. I have never seen a recoil pad on a bench gun. My buddys would think [know] I'm a pussy if I had one. lol. I was thinking of a vest with a pad in it. Just wondering what others did.

Have a good day.

I tore my rotator cuff a couple years ago, my shoulder will start a dull ache to burn when elevated at a shooting bench for extended periods. I just get up and walk around awhile until discomfort subsides. Might have yours looked at in case it is the underlying issue.

With such a light recoiling rifle, I would be surprised if any sort of recoil pad would make much of a difference. I would take a serious look at changing up your shooting position to see if you can find a position that does not hurt.

The second major sign I had bad C5/C6 disk issues was when shooting prone. I had a dull ache that would present in my shoulder, and I thought that my shoulder was just stiff from weather and/or work. I was wrong. The issue was that the shooting position was pinching the nerve in my neck where the crushed disk was. The discomfort and pain was real, but I didn’t understand the signs because I did not go to the doctor until it was too late. If you are asking advice from me, I’d say don’t wait too long to see a good doctor…if you have neck issues like I did, you’ll want to know as early as possible and then develop a plan that works for you.

Don't live your life by trying to please other people's opinion of you because someone will always find fault with you.

I have a recoil reducing strap on pad that works well to reduce the felt recoil. However, even with that, I had to stop shooting 30 caliber rifle, even with reduced loads because of a spinal condition. I hated like hell to give up shooting my 308 but I had too. I shoot mostly 223 Rem's these days.

For deer, I wwnt back to the 243 Win which is what I started with over 50 years ago. With the right bullet, correct shot placement, and reasonable distance, the 243 will do the job. With my light weight 243's, I still have to use the recoil reducing strap at the range. For deer hunting, the heavy coat provides enough recoil reduction. Besides I'm only taking one or two shots.

As we age we may have to make adjustments to stay in the game. It's part of the adapt and overcome reality of aging.

You may want have your spinal condition checked to make sure nothing is going sideways there. MQ1 has some good advice.

I had to have my fixed, couldn't get into position to shoot any longer, now it's the only part of me that don't hurt.

With an MRI, many surgeons can tell what the problem is. Trick is to put a steroid shot in the right place, you can get 3 per year. Lots of shoulder surgeons are bad or half Azz. Find out who is the surgeons surgeon, and who does the college athletes in the area...they will be the best.

In the mean time, a Limbsaver Airtec Recoil pad works wonders, and there are slip on kinds that I use for 308's....they are the best of the best!

These come in different sizes

Top of the arm sounds like an impingement issue. Gets worse when you lift your arm up or the position it would be in for bench shooting. Been through the same thing the last couple of years. Physical therapy has pretty much taken care of it for me to strengthen and keep things stretched out. You've got to keep doing the exercises they teach you indefinitely, but beats surgery.

I have had both neck and shoulder pain issues. Physical therapy was wrong for my cuff pain, and didn't help my archery hobby. Was able to contact an Olympic archery doctor, gave me specific directions to allow shooting(bow shoulder issue, not drawing side). Years ago my neck I was able to do a One time steroid shot, when I had the disk inflammation my finger tips would be numb/tingling along with the painful shoulder. I shoot 8-12 bow shots each day, I shoot 35+ yards to maximise accuracy for hunting, I don't want to use a designated "helper" for the Montana archery permit I have this fall. Not all doctors have the same knowledge/experience don't be unwilling to change or contact others about your situation.
