Shotmarker question

Good afternoon. I just joined a gun club that uses Shotmarker on the 1K yd range. One of the members there advised that the load that I use for my 308 may not be supersonic at 1K and that can affect the Shotmarker scoring. I shoot a 175 SMK over IMR4064 that consistently clocks 2675-2680mv. My ballistic calculator says that it should be around 1200 at 1K.

Has anyone experienced this? This load has shot very well for me over the years and I would prefer to keep using it since I have a few boxes of the SMKs.

Thanks

It is or isnt. Shotmarker will not detect a subsonic projectile - but I have no idea whether there is any tolerance - i.e just how much faster than the cut off point a projectile needs to be. I doubt that your load will cause any issues, other than on a very cold day! BTW - nice to see someone using a "classic" 308 load.

Maybe Adam will jump in on the thread?

Thanks. I'm pretty sure that he wouldn't have told me that if he had not witnessed it enough to warn me.

I have been away from the sport since about 2013 so all of my stuff is 'classic' LOL.

I'll try some out and then try to develop some higher BC loads that cruise a little faster at 1K.

I can tell you from personal experience, a 155g sierra #2155 308 cal thru a Palma gun, 70 degrees air temp and zero altitude, will not register on a shotmarker with a muzzle velocity of 2975 FPS. Southern Louisiana has very high humidity typically, and the bullet didn't register even though ballistic calculators said it should be going 1285 FPS at 1000yards.
When I switched to a #2156 or a berger fullbore they registered but my accuracy node was at 3020FPS MV. So I needed a little slicker, little quicker bullet to get them to register on shotmarker.

It will pop up on the screen saying if your closes to being subsonic as well giving your at target speed and as you know the wu
Ind can have effect on bullets speed at target as far as calculating speed.

This is a lot better electronic system and WILL score a subsonic shot… Used on many ranges in Australia where the company that makes it is located…
Here is a setup in the USA… Hopefully you may see more of this system.

I can confirm what Fire Dog said above. The HEXTA targets will pick up seriously subsonic shots.
How do I know? Well, to test our system, I fired subsonic 22LR Ammo, from a Marlin 39A, from 200 yards away at several of our HEXTA targets -the system detected them all, and plotted them properly and accurately.

Currently, Reade Range near Altoona, PA and my home range, Bridgeville Rifle and Pistol Club in Bridgeville, DE are the only two ranges currently running the HEXTA system -we celebrated our 11th year with those targets in June of this year.

If you ever want to check them out, come on out and shoot with us!

“Better” is relative. More consistently precise in windy conditions? Sure, system with enclosed microphones has the advantage. Heavier targets? Yes, Hexta. Dependency on membranes being maintained? Yes, Hexta. Pricing? Hex Systems quotes only privately and establishes non-disclosure agreements with customers so that what they paid can’t be made public.

I hope all the technologies continue to improve, and competition provides motivation. The race has already been run in the US, with one clear commercial and "installed base winner”. International real-time access to individual scores during National Championship matches endorses the acceptance of that system within the community. Hexta is not "a lot better" system for my personal use, nor was it ever even in the running for installation by my clubs. We have target faces with thousands of rounds through them without the reliability of our etargets being affected - our maintenance requirements have therefore been essentially Nil. I wish them well, and hope they continue to push the accuracy criteria for all etarget systems.

Definitely not affordable for personal usage unless you are in the Mega Rich category but the target system does function as a “Live Time” scoring system.
It is posted online during any competition.
Membrane durability appears to be quite good as my club only has ever replaced them twice in 10 years.
The concept is terrific and I agree with you that hopefully there will be some competion in development to make various systems more readily available to the general public..
Before being allowed to fire on the HEXTA target the shooter must fire on a pulled target to ensure that they are “in the black” as the membrane sensors are in the perimeter of the target frame and costly to replace. Once established that you are “on target” you proceed with two sighters that can be kept or just one which is the second shot. Having a small laptop computer showing impact with a 1” grid square overlay is a great system.

Anything can be better..it’s a matter of cost..$800 versus a 5k system..
Nothing beat the shotmarker in the affordable price range. It work and work well.

For a range- cost X 10-14 stations add up fast.. the shooter that is subsonic a a 1000 yard should get a better caliber that will be more accurate in buckling the wind at this distance with less elevation woes.
