Shot out Barrel in 222 remington

DF1,I agree with snert try a good cleaning and get a strong magnifying glass and look at the crown for any nicks and if nessesary get a crown job. then get some wind flags and learn how to read the wind before you spend money on a custom barrel... then if you get to the point you beleive the barrel is the limiting factor by all means put on a new barrel. it would take a lot of powder and bullets to cut the throught out of a 222
Good luck and whatever You do have fun doing it!!!

Lets see...rebarrel to a different cartridge when you're starting with the worlds best target cartridge ever developed...hmmmm. I own a .222 in a model 600 and although I sacrifice 150 FPS with its short barrel, it shoots the guts out of a dime at 100, the guts out of a quarter at 200, and turns crows into vaper balls at 300! With 3000 FPS, the recoil of a red ryder bb gun with the fraction a the cost to reload compared to other .224's why re-chamber? I've got to agree with Snert on it not burning barrels. You'll die an old man before you burn out a .222 barrel. Its the best target cartridge ever developed.....bar none!

Hi,

I collect remington Model 788s. I glass bed and work up loads. Fun.

I have a 788 222 remington. I am sending off to re-barrel. I like Bartlein but barrel manufacturers suggestions are welcome.

Question is this: should I rebarrel to .223 or 223 AI. I intend to shoot 100yd BR. I sure have 222 reloading equipment, but not over invested.

Thank you, JR

This is an old post so whatever you were going to do has probably been done. The .223AI is a great cartridge and if you're just shooting BR with this gun, loading it single shot is fine. But for someone who might want to do this and use the magazine, a 223AI won't work. The 788 magazine - both 222 and 223 are the same - has a vertical rib that's right where the shoulder is. The std .223 case works fine but an AI case won't go in. For those who say different, it's very possible to wear out a .222......I did it with my own 788......40's at 3700+ killing a lot of prairie dogs and groundsquirrels. It's now a .223.

Congratulations on burning out your barrel and loading a .222 way above normal chamber pressures.

At 43,000 cup the peak flame temperature is just reaching the melting point of modern barrel steels. If the OP barrel is shot out then he also jacked the chamber pressure up over the normal rated pressure for the .222.

Another one....self righteous know-it-all who doesn't.

Industry standard operating pressure for .222 Rem. is 46K cup.
Are you saying that by using factory ammo you will never experience any throat erosion? Your serious?
