Shorty 6.5: x47 or Creed?

So a little background.

I'm learning to spin together my own rifles. I'm not very good at it but I'm giving it hell. I have an itch to build a short barreled (17") 6.5 rifle. It's gonna be a "cheap" rifle on a Remington 700 that I trued up and a Green Mountain or Wilson barrel.

Yes, yes. I know about velocity loss and the detriments of going with a short rifle all too well. I'm not building this to shoot a mile. I'm building it to shoot at 300 and have a hoot doing it. So all the crap that is gonna get spewed about "why" can stop now.

I'm betwixt and between the 6.5Creed and the 6.5x47Lapua. I owned a Lapua and it was awesome. I would certainly do another. The appeal of the Creed is it's everywhere. And I've not owned one. There's easily available ammo from the store and TONS of load data.

The plan is to build the rifle around the 123 Sierra Tipped Match King. Barrel will be a 1:8 in case I want to shoot heavier. But mostly the 123's. The BC is pretty close to the 130's and it can go a bit faster.

I know that the differences between the two are splitting hairs, but I figured I’d beat this dead horse just a bit more.

47. I’ve shot a lot of both. Both will shoot well. But in my experience the 47 is easier to tune and keep in tune. But you would probably be very happy with either.

I have to add though...a premium barrel is well worth the slightly higher price over a bargain priced barrel...regardless of application. Just my opinion.

Thanks.

I actually talked to my buddy that is looking at doing something similar to me and we are both going to wait a bit and buy better barrels. Thank you for your input.

6.5 Creedmoor is a very popular caliber in XP100 pistols, it works very well in short barrels, I love mine.

for hunting I'm using Nosler 120 Bal.Tips and 130 grain Accubonds with Superformance. For LR shooting I like the 130 gr Bergers with Superformance.

Sometimes I want to start a thread on Sightron S3 vs Vortex GE. BUT it has been hashed out a dozen times. Put your big boy pants on and pick one.

Big Boy pants come in camo with lots of pockets - Creedmoor style. Lapua just makes me think of Tye-dye spandex from the 80s. :p No judgement, I'm sure spandex is comfy given how many humans choose to wear it.

I bought a Howa 1500 in 6.5 Creedmoor. Had the barrel cut to 16.25 and threaded for a suppressor(AAC-SDN-6). It is a real pleasure to shoot. It's topped with an NF 3.5-10 SHV. I just loaded Varget from 36 to 39 in 1/2 grain increments over the 123 Hornady SST's. Looking forward to the results this coming weekend.

Let me know how she does. It's close enough to what I'm hoping to build that I'm very curious about your results.
I wish for supressed rifles...

I had the chance to shoot the 16.25 inch Creedmoor this past Friday at 100 yards.. It was 90 degrees and muggy. The rifle shot well. Had to wait 15 minuets between each group. The best group was from the 36.5 grain load of Varget. It was .511 (3-shot). The next best was 38.5 at .842 (3-shot). I stopped at 39.0 grains of which the 1st (2) were touching. I may have pulled the 3rd shot. There were no pressure signs at 39.0 grains so I am going up to 39.5, 40.0 and 40.5 and see what happens. My goal is to get to 2700-2800 if possible.

Fantastic to hear. Thank you.

You have an 8 or 9 twist barrel?
