Shortening a H&S Precision stock

Yetiman

Boom boom boom boom, Hey HEY !
I have an H&S precision stock on a Remington 5R, and it is much too long for me.

I am on a number of blood thinners and bruise very easily, so I have been wearing a PACT recoil pad with it and am taking this into account in the amount I am shortening it. I am looking to take about an inch and a quarter off of it.

I just want to make sure there is nothing funky about this stock (like a hollow cavity or something) before running it through the band saw.

Any advise ?

You may have some difficulty finding someone on the forum who has cut into a H-S Precision stock.
Why not contact them directly:

H-S PRECISION, INC.
1301 TURBINE DRIVE,
RAPID CITY, SD 57703
(605) 341-3006 TEL
(605) 342-8964 FAX

If you decide to cut it and you find you need to fill a void in the stock I'd recommend this stuff:

It's pretty quick, easy to work (trim and sand) and it stays put.

I can tell you that the older black flecked HS stocks that came with the Remington VSSF family of rifles certainly have hollow butt stocks. I'd be willing to bet most including today's models are, or they would be needlessly heavy.

If you dare to cut that HS stock and find it hollow which it will be you can fill
The cavity with some foam and leave about 2" shy of the end and scuff the inside with 80 grit sand paper and fill with epoxy

I will be calling them in the morning. I tried calling just before posting this, but they had closed for the day about 20 minutes earlier.

Thanks for the info so far !

My HS stock really wasn't a problem being hollow, as I purposely cut off the original laminated rubber recoil pad so I could have easy access into the stock to apply weight in the form of lead or sand. (An old trick I had previously done was to apply sand into the stock through the 1/8" tap hole under the back sling swivel)

For anyone that cares to know; You can always install a recoil pad onto the hollow section of butt that you just sawed through. You simply epoxy two small wood blocks into the butt to give the 2 recoil-pad screws something to thread and grip onto.

Thanks for the tips.
I was going to cut the section off that I need to remove, then take the pad/plastic spacer/cut off stub and put it in the freezer and try to remove the glued on plastic spacer and or pad to re use (and re-shape) if I can and epoxy them back on.
Otherwise I will fabricate one with wood as described.

I dug into it today. I was going to take it to a friends house and use his band saw, but schedules just weren't aligning, so I cut it with a hack saw and finished it off on a vertical belt sander.

It was really easy to cut. I wouldn't say it's hollow so much as it has a small rectangular void in at, about an inch and a half by 3/4 inch. There is still a lot of material in there.

For now I put a slip on Pachmayer pad so I can try it at the range before taking too much off.

Putting it on the rest and freehand it seems good though. I will permanently mount a pad next week, simply gluing it on (like they did from the factory).
