i need to shorten a 222 F L die .005-.006”. what tooling do i need to do this on my lathe?

I use a carbide insert. Depending on the hardness of the outside layer, you can at times do it with a HSS tool. -Al

I use Borazon inserts. Will cut 60+ rc hardness.

This is the best approach. Shell holders aren't hard and easily ground. You can take off quite a bit before you would ever harm the shell holder from pulling a case out.

i’ve used wet and dry on my shell holder but really slow. i’ll try to think is a more aggressive method.

Grind a shell holder down and check out the ones sold by some companies that are different measurements, might see one that is already .005

I used a belt sander once, it took about 39 seconds.

Chuck shell holder upside down in a drill press. Run it down on a well oiled sharpening stone. Measure first, only takes seconds and comes out like it came from the factory that way. Do a couple. Different thickness for different jobs.

Absolutely agree. I speak from experience. All that it takes is a piece of wet and dry of the appropriate grit, your dial calipers, and a flat surface.

Also...on the shortened shell holders, I use an electric engraver and mark them as to how much they've been shortened. Harbor Freight sells a stupid-cheap (< $10) engraver with a carbide tip that works very well.
