Short vs long 6br

I've always been a fan of short barrel (19-21") for my short to mid range shooting. I've always felt like shorter is stiffer with less harmonics and makes it easier to find good loads as well as easier tuning. I know you loose velocity in the short barrel but do you really loose any accuracy? Does it gain accuracy through being stiffer and self dampening? Any disadvantages other than velocity loss? Any advantages other than a better balanced, lighter, stiffer rifle?

All my bench guns are 21.5 in length. You have to make weight so using a longer barrel is not possible to my knowledge. You wont loose accuracy , just a tiny bit of speed over say a 28 inch barrel. Nothing to worry about.

If it were not for weight limits, I think you would see barrels grow - when I was shooting PB Bench, barrels were 26" - until the weight limits changed, and I was shooting against 80 pound rail guns :( :(

P.S... there are no "self dampening" barrels. Shorter barrels have harmonics, just at higher frequencies.

Registered Competition Match Results simply don't prove out that the Heavy Bench (aka Rail Guns) have an advantage over the Light Varmint, Sporter, and Heavy Varmint classes ( and I compared all classes contesting five 5-shot group aggs.) In many contests the winning LV agg will beat the HB. FWIW, the IBS 100 yd agg record is held by a Sporter, the 200 yd record is held by an HV.

I did not mean that they were "more accurate", but that they are generally easier to live with - at least that was my experience.

In my experience with a 6br I have a short barrel setup and a couple at 28".
The short barrel is a savage bull and defiantly gives up nothing but a little velocity

My 6ppc guns are all 21.5-22" in length. For 100-300 yard shooting I see no need for a long barrel setup

Thanks for the input...... I feel like I want to loose weight. I'm at 26" now and thought about cutting it back to 21" but it's shooting so good I think I'll wait till the setback to cut and crown.
