Short Tripods - Coyote Hunting

Lately I've been giving some thought to trying a tripod for coyote hunting. Are there any decent ones out there that won't break the bank but will work for a guy sitting on a hillside? I'm not sure where to start looking.

I have two, a full BogPod and one with just the Bog head on my own tripod. On a side hill I much prefer a good set of sticks. I also do a lot of hiking away from the truck and find the tripods kind of a pain to pack around. They sure are handy when you have to stand up for a stand(short sage or greasewood flats).

The standard BogPod tripod will adjust for a hillside but would be very hard to move for a predator that doesn't come in in the zone you have covered.

I think I paid $70 for the Bog Head and have it on a tripod I found in a campground dumpster. It is handy for standup stands. I have swapped out the long adjustment handles for short ones. I really need to pick up a ball head for it.

For a hundred bucks, a Bog Pod is a pretty good option.

When I transitioned from Harris bipods, the Bogpod was the next step, & I had great luck with it, & more versatile on hill sides.

One change I made was to cut 2 wedges of ethafoam and taped them to the sides of the rest for a snug fit on the forend. Held it tight enough to not have to hold the gun, but easy to grab & go if need be.

I would save some extra, I have owned too many tripods to count, upgrading every time. With the cost of ammo these days, you might loose more money on missed shots with a wobbly tripod than if you bought a nice one. You might be able to find a used photography tripod (Manfrotto/Bogen/Gitzo/Etc) for a decent price. Also, get one that they legs can pivot outward to get it lower; same height, but wider and more stable. Mine is expensive, but very, very stable and I use it all the time. Made impacts from 700-870y at a match last weekend with it.

The 1st one I got was this one. I upgraded after 1 season. Super nice people there.

I've used the Jim Shockey gen 2 for a little over a year, fairly decent can be wobbly at times, I've decided to upgrade so I just borrowed a friends Bog Pod, deathgrip, i'm sold it's rock steady and locks the rifle in solid swivels up down , about $200. A veteran owned company makes a good tripod but are somewhat overpriced inmo, over $500 andup.Bog Pod has a good reputation and will stand by their product. All are not perfect but the Bog Pod deathgrip sold me.

I use a homemade cross stick which is more robust than any on the commercial market.

I found that it is much easier to deploy and move about with. While I'm primarily a varmint hunter and just dabble in predator hunting, I found that in predator hunting, I have to move about more if nothing response to my calling. The cross stick makes it easy to travel to different locations.

With practice with a varmint grade accuracy rifle, when I'm in the zone, I can hold 1 moa off the sticks, but this took a lot of practice and technique development to reach this level of skill.

If you are sitting, could you use a bipod?
I bought a Harris that i use while seated. Some guys use Swagger blpods.

Bog pod and get the the open cradle or clamp head.
I use the wide cradle myself.
I use robust shooting sticks I made over my bog pod though. Much easier on hill sides or in snow.

How do you like it, a friend has the exact one and has never put it on a rifle, he told me to take it and use it, and if I like it he's give me a deal, your opinion sir, and THX
The one i have has been a good unit. Its clear enough to kill with and always holds zero. I cant complain. I use a 640 resolution scanner and a 384 resolution scope. Works great my opinion

What's the range that you can positively identify a lawful target. Some Amish blasted two farmers dogs thinking they were coyotes. That wouldn't be me , however just wondering and is the clarity acceptable. Most of my nighttime shooting would be 100 yards .
