short range br shooters, a bag question?

...my question is what is "almost free recoil"? I thought there were two ways. Pinning the rifle or free recoil.

Jim, some shoot pure free recoil and some use thumb pressure and. some slight shoulder pressure. Me I could never be consistent enough to get anything but free recoil to work. Now at my age it isn't getting any better, I have a tuff time remembering what condition I picked to shoot in LOL.... jim

the spacing has very little to do with riding on the ears. you let sand out of the bottom it closes the spacing... now if use a flat bottom stock it is a different story.... jim
Jim
I understand what you saying regarding manipulating the bag by collapsing or overfilling however a bag is stitched with a set spacing as mine is 3/8 at the base so that won’t change, a wider stock will just sit higher tracking on the ears themselves.
As you say also a flat bottom stock is a different story

Older stocks had 3/8 flats on the bottom, now everything is 1/2" and 5/8 for long range. round bottom is getting low as you can, but you have to ride on the sides. I like to ride on the corners on a flat bottom and if you come back into battery and the muzzle goes down the back is going up so you can take a little sand out of the ears or add some sand to the bottom. no big deal ...jim

That correct, adding sand to the bottom spreads the ears apart, taking out sand closes them up. You can also adjust the fill in the ears to change the the space..jim
Thanks. This is helpful for me.
If I want to tighten space between ears, reduce sand in bag and/or increase sand in ears.

Is it ok if your bag is not filled tight?

Personally”
I didn’t have any luck with an under filled bag, had to keep fidgeting with it. The other side of the coin is too tight wasn’t much better, especially the front bag. I’m about 90% now for the rear and a bit softer in the front.

As usual I’m in the minority or (Black Sheep )as Dusty calls me.;)

Great advice from Johara1 watch the muzzle when returning to Battery.

Seems to get my ears right, I need to loosen the bag up. Problem is that it seems to be settling after every shot. I have gone to a rubber mallet and tapping the bag.

No true answer to that, when you push it back to the forend stop it is in the middle. too hard of a front bag will cause you issues and a a rifle not balanced will too.... jim

Thanks James. Appreciate the thoughtful response.
