short range accuracy with 1:8' twist?

Mike, I ran a 10 twist for 4 years when I started shooting SR at my club, I tried some bib 95 FB's, they shot great but I couldnt get enough of them in time so I went with 90 Berger BT's, also shot real well, it wont run with a PPC but it did well enough to garner me club champ for 4 years!, Some of the other guys switched to 30BR & I was getting whooped up on regularly so I swiched to 30BR also, TOUGH CROWD!,
Sorry, I forgot to mention, we shoot score at the club! ;)
I'm wondering if it will shoot well at 200-300 primarily and on really tough days. I've got a bunch of 90 gr bergers and enough appropriate powders to use it on those days for a year or so.

It's been several years since I played with a 10 twist. One of the few matches I won with that gun and bbl was exactly when a straight 6br shouldn't have much chance anyway. It was a 100 yard trigger pulling condition day, shooting score against a good field of shooters, mostly 30br's and a few ppc's mixed in IIRC. Seems like it was the first or second season for UBR, so caliber neutral. I think I was shooting Berger 87's on that day but it's been too long to remember for sure. Either those or the 90's, though.

I've got a new Kreiger bbl waiting for me to run a reamer in. I want this one to be a 6 Grendel rather than a br but brass is unobtainium now and it doesn't look good for a while, getting it. I kinda hate the idea of chambering it up for something I can't get good brass for. I do have some but not an abundance and I need to make what I have last if I can. I suppose I could do it as a Grendel and set it back a tad and re chamber to a BR if need be later.

Either way, it won't be my primary gun setup but one I can go to for 200-300 or fun matches, maybe a 600 match sprinkled in. Not the best for that either but I'm set on trying it and having it for those days. It'll be fun to see what I can get out of it.

What load worked best for you with the Berger 90's? I've got a few 95 Bibs but a bunch of the 90 Berger BT's. I know Varget will work but hoping for h4895 or 8208. I think it might like those in the slightly smaller grendel case but will see.

Mike, I ran 30.0 grains of varget, 90 grain bergers, .004" jam, shot real well for me, the rifle was a Cooper TRP chambered in 6br, FUN rifle to shoot!, I have since moved on to a full on custom rifle, but, still have very fond memories of shooting that Cooper, still have it & am planning on getting it gone through once they get Cooper back on it's feet!
Have a Cooper Montana Varminter in 14 twist & have shot a few groups in the 1's with that as well!

Thank you! I was hoping you had some magic love potion for 4895 or 8208 but I'll figure something out. If not, I'll use Varget. Saw some just the other day.

Love the little Coopers. I wish I still had one in particular it because it was a super good shooting rifle. It was a very early model 21 single shot with a Christensen(sp)bbl and stock in 7mm-08. I forget the weight but it was very light and an absolute hammer for a lightweight hunting rifle. To this day, maybe the best shooting hunting rifle I've ever had my hands on. I sold it back to the only person that had much chance of getting it...same guy I bought it from. He's a pretty good friend and he was low on funds so it was almost a loan anyway. I knew he'd get back on his feet and he'd always said he wanted his daughter to have that gun when he's gone.

Mike, in the 14 twist Montana varminter, I have found 31 grains of H4895 works very well with Berger BR Column's or 70 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips, I use the BT's for coyotes!
On a side note, the coyotes HATE that rifle!;)

An 8 twist can shoot very well, depending on what you mean by “very well”. Will it, all else equal, outshoot a slow twist with light bullets? Unlikely. But the difference isn’t huge. Good 100-107 grain match bullets can quite easily shoot in the 2s or possibly even a little better at 100 yards under ideal conditions with an excellent rifle. If that’s good enough, it’s good enough. If you’re trying to win short range BR matches against hot rod PPCs, you’ve got your work cut out for you.

If you don’t care about long range ballistics, a good rule of thumb is to start with the lighter, high quality bullets if maximum accuracy is your goal. But there is no substitute for just trying some options.

Long story short, the cure for fast twists is very good bullets. But you’re starting out with a handicap.

Not a 6br but a 1/8 twist 6brx. At a hundred yards doing load development. All are just 3 shot groups but it repeated it self several times. These are jumped between 15 and 20 thou. With a mild varget load. 105 hybrid . This is a shorter barrel brx only 25 inches. Will see how it does this weekend at 600.
What is your setup? Action, trigger, barrel, stock. Front rest?
I run 105s at 2830 with 30gr of N140 out of 1:8 25" barrel. What velocity are you getting with varget?

This is a Remington 40x action in a revolution stock I bedded with a old Dominion custom rifle barrel brux blank. with a worked on 40x trigger that breaks about 4 ounces. Shooting off a Sinclair comp rest and protektor DR rear bag. I've settled at 31.7 of varget at 2930ish This is with Peterson brass. 6brx.

Also has a 10-50 sightron siii in Burris sig. zee rings. It also has a EC tuner on it but I haven't messed with it at all just screwed it on and did load development. Weighs right at 17 pounds

Well we had our 600 yard match today. And the brx shots good at 100 and 600. Ended up winning light gun group. My agg was 2.3 for 4 targets and my smallest group was 1.8 .
