short magazine to fit WSM, compatible with AICS-style mags?

I'm currently using an Alpha mag, 7-round magazine with my 7WSM hunting rifle. Frankly, I hate it. I don't need 7 frickin' rounds and the magazine sticks out a mile. A 5 or 3 round would be ideal. I've never shot more than 2 shots at an animal and if I can't hit him within 3, he deserves to get away... :-)

Anyone using a shorter magazine that would fit 3 rounds of WSM (or 5) and be useable with a bottom metal that utilizes AICS style magazines?

if you are currently using the alpha mags, I would have to assume that it is for the extended coal they offer. supply and demand probably dictate their capacity. have you thought about the possibility of finding someone that can modify your existing mags into a shorter configuration?

if you find that someone let me know

as a thought you may head over to 'brains forum' since there are a lot of magazine "tuners" there and see if one would be willing to take the project

Stocky's Gun stocks shows a 3 rnd clip for 300 WSM. Kiff also has a Am 3 rnd clip for 300 WSM. Might not be long enough. 3.055

I have a new Accurate Mag for WSM I would part with. They are a high end AI copy with the front strap removed for approx. 2.980" They area based on a 5 round 308 mag and hold 3 WSM cartridges comfortably. Feed lips are set from Accurate Mag no mods needed.

Thanks, I'm gonna try one of the AM 3 rnd clips. We'll see how it works.

Keep me posted how it works. In the market for one too.

They work fine, both Kiff and Stockys are AM. AM = Accurate Mag. They are 3.055 OD. not inside. Stockys also sells AI mags which are even smaller inside.

That will be too short for 180 vlds . My oal in 7 saum is 3.060. Will the 300 wm box work? I need one for a long action remy.

.300 WSM does not feed properly from a .300WM but does work from an Ultra mag. Have tried .300WSM loaded as long as 3.25" in the Ultra and they feed perfectly.

Nah. Not too short. You have to seat them very deeply and accuracy does suffer some, but still acceptable for hunting purposes. I took an elk with them seated like that two years ago.

However, I *have* switched to the Barnes 168gn LRX, just because I prefer Barnes bullets for hunting, vs. a frangible like Berger. The elk wouldn't have been any deader with the Barnes, but I've been using them for so long now in different rifles that I trust them.

I loaded the 180's to 2.950", base to tip. This was *way* off the lands as I made the mistake of not buying a custom reamer to match. As I said, it shot *ok*, not great. At 600 yards, it was a bit over MOA, maybe 6" - 8", which was fine for my purposes at the time. The 168gr. Barnes LRX I'm shooting now is more accurate.

When I re-barrel at some point, I might go back to the 180's, after sending a dummy round in to PTG to order a custom a reamer.
