Short case neck length.

Hi.
Can necks on the short side, say .035 less than the saami minimun, cause problems.
Have a hunting rifle in 6 5 cm with cases 1.875" and wonder if they will cause any problems to the barrel. Tried several for accuracy and they are fine.
Thanks in advance.

Your good to go, they'll grow.
Probably get a couple few more firings before needing a trim.

did you trimmed them before you fireformed them?

i like long necks. don't trim them till they are maxed out and then only to half way between max and trim length. some 40 degree cases never need trimming for the life of the case. could be that creedmoor brass will grow slowly

load them and shoot them. keep them separate and don't do that again.

No these were fireformed from 22 250 and ended up short. They havent been trimmed. Was just a bit worried the shortened case may cause adverse wear and premature erosion. Wanted to use these cases up for hunting.

I cant imagine having that much no mans land between the case mouth and end of chamber but thats just me. For comparison thats an average spark plug gap the bullet has to jump to ever hit the barrel.

Pump the brakes n back up the bus.
Having a short neck is only going to lessen the amount of bullet hold .
The bullet is still setting in the chamber the same as one with a sammi spec case,
Coal is coal.
Now a short CASE is a different story.

Please tell me just how you deduced that when the op never mentioned what bullet he was shooting or seating depth? dedogs

No matter if he has a zero freebore shooting a wadcutter his case neck is shorter than saami trim length. It would be the same as you picking any cartridge under the sun and trimming the neck off too short. Imagine the carbon buildup in that cavity between the case neck and end of chamber

We had this discussion a few months back.
I had mentioned the 1000 pieces of Starline
223 brass I'd purchased. I didn't have enough brass to fill a 30 round mag that even measured 1.75" trim to length equates to
970 some odd pieces shorter than spec.
If you fire them THEY will GROW is/was the general consensus.

Explain the difference in opinion please.
You know I'm listening and learning.

Sure you can fire them but in reality how many firings will it take to grow .035- 100? 150? If all of them are short, you know it and wont put a long one in without cleaning the carbon first, and have a short enough freebore that your bullet seated .035 farther than normal still works then no problem. But if somebody shoots a while with .035 short brass then puts the saami max length brass in there that carbon will crimp the bullet giving overpressure of who knows what amount.

Now that makes sense. And something to keep in mind when we shoot our ar's.
Thanks. Brett

I've been shooting a Dasher with cases formed from Lapua 6BR in a Norma Dasher chamber. The cases have not grown any after 6 firings and are actually getting shorter. The cases are about .020 less than Dasher trim length and (1.530) and there is at least .075 between the end of the brass and the end of the chamber. I have not had any problems with carbon build up in the open area of the chamber. The photo below is of the area after a normal after range session cleaning. The inside of the case neck is on the right and the beginning of the freebore is on the left.

Has nothing to do with with when the bullet "strikes the barrel". He could be loading at "jam". I agree that a carbon ring build up can cause pressure problems with dis-similar length cases. dedogs
