short bbl 243

I have a Stiller Tac 30 action with a Krieger HV 8 twist bbl at 28 inches,,it is in an AICS 1.5 chassis and it shoots the 105 VLDH with 41.5 H4350 at 3200 in very tight groups and is a hammer to 1200 yards,,

what I am considering is cutting the bbl back to about 20-21 inches to use it as a deer rifle out of a shooting house where shots can get to 600 yards,,

how much velocity would I loose cutting 8 inches off the bbl,,,I have another Bartlien 6BR bbl with low round count I could use for the project if it is gonna take me down to slower than 6BR speeds,,
just wonder what speeds you guys get from a 8 twist 20 inch 243 with 105 class bullets??

thanx,

If it shoots like you say, leave that barrel be. In a shooting house the long barrel should not hurt you. I don't like to change things that work. Do another barrel.

prone off the Atlas bipod and a rear bag it will shoot bugholes at 100 yards and less than 3 inches at 600 is no problem and it is a lazer beam man,,with a 250 zero shooting deer kill zone size targets it is a dead hold to 325-350 and 400 yards is 3 MOA ,,500 yards is 5 MOA and 600 yards is 8 MOA on the 4.5-14 LR/T M1 ,,
shooting the 10 inch gong at 1,030 yards on the farm I have better luck with this rifle than my 6.5x47 or 6 BRDX bench rifles,,one day wind wasnt too bad I hit it 16 in a row and 18 of 20 shots,,

I get it the 243 may be hard on bbls but I really like how it shoots and the cheap ammo from Walmart with the 90 gr Accubonds shoot really well at 3025 fps also if I needed them in a pinch,,

I had a 243 win shooting 105 vld's, H1000, at 3000 fps with a 26" 1:8 twist barrel. Chopped it to 20 1/2", and with same load it dropped to 2885 fps avg. Hope this helps.

First I would like to say that I am a 243 fan and have been for years . Let me reduce everything to the ridiculous.. the average barrel life of any 6mm is approximately 38 seconds... yes you read this right... that is if you could have a bullet long enough to go 3000 fps for 38 seconds down your tube the life would be over so... 243 v 6slr my be the difference of a half second or so . Shoot what you won't and what you have confidence in , have fun , it's ALL good.

With my 15" barrel 243 Savage using Hornady 105 match and H100V my chrony average is 2743. Wasn't sure if I should trust those numbers but I put 2740 in my ballistic program and the clicks were where they should be to 1000 so it must have been. To get the chrony set up I had the grandson launch a few BBs over the screen. He was mad that he was 90 fps short of their advertised MV on the box. I was going to give it a couple drops of pell gun oil in the oil hole to see if we could get him there but we ran out of time.

Not quite.. ;)

If a bullet flies at 3000 fps, it will pass through a 24″ barrel in 1/1500th of a second. If you have a useful barrel life of 3000 rounds, that would translate to just two seconds of actual bullet-in-barrel life.
IF you are worried about barrel life and settle for something that claims more, will you be happy ?

This thread is about lost of speed due to the reduction in barrel length.... It has nothing to do with .243 vs 6slr barrel life.
