***Short Action mag bolt face--What would you go with???

What caliber should I go with if I had a Short action with a Mag bolt face???

Long range gun, hunting, tac matches, banging steel. really anything.

Advise please!!!!

For what you want to do- a 300 WSM with a 1-11 or 1-12 twist barrel and throat it for 175-190 gr bullets. The recoil isn't bad and accuracy is incredibly easy to obtain.

I currently have a .284 and love it. But dont really want the same kind of performance. Is the 7SAUM or WSM too close to the .284 to really tell a difference?

For the same bullet and barrel, the 7mmWSM could give you as much 300 fps higher maximum velocity with a greatly reduced barrel life.

Just make sure that you install a decelerator pad.LOL The 7 saum or 300 wsm are great calibers.

I walked into a great deal on a Win 70 in .300 WSM a few years ago, including ammo, dies, components... Neat cartridge. I have no complaints!

6.5 WSSM, better barrel life and will do everything you want it to do, I'm planning on doing this my next build. You do have to neck up brass for this but dies are available without having to have them made.

A Surgeon Action with a WSM bolt face would be my choice, you can get 7 rounds in a modified AICS mag, thumping 7mm 180VLDs will put the smack down on animals, and buck the wind very easily, but in most Tac matches somebody shooting a 6mm(243) or 6.5mm(260Rem, 6.5 Creedmore) will take the top spot.

Given that you're going to be hunting with it as well, 300 WSM. 11 or 12 twist unless you're going to throw real heavies. Accurate & effective & the brass will be available forever. Love the 284 also.

7x300 WSM. You can get the good brass you want as well as a better neck.
