Short action long range cartridge

For the application you described, it doesn't appear you'll need to mag feed these so why worry about OAL restrictions and mag length. Single feeding your rounds for LR or ELR is pretty normal so I'd probably stretch them out as far as I reasonable could and squeeze ever last bit out of whatever cartridge you decide on. Something off of the WSM case, whether it be 6.5, 7mm, or 30 cal would be my choice.

I will most likely single feed the majority of the time so that's not a big concern. I will still get a magazine and develop at least one load that runs well in the magazine even if it is not best performance at ELR, but the majority of my shooting is just for fun so no problem single feeding.

I don't want to swap to a long action because I already have this rifle and I think it will be capable of what I need. Long action would just tempt me to go with one of the bigger magnums and use more powder and have more recoil but realistically it's not necessary for my application.

300 wsm was my original choice but I had seen a lot of 7 saum reccomendations recently. I have lots of 30 cal cal bullets since I load a lot of 308 and 300 blackout. Also already have 300 wsm dies so that is another advantage if I go that route.

I’ve noticed excellent product support for the 300 WSM, it’s a proven cartridge at 1000 yards.

(I’m venturing into the short mags with my Son in Law a 270 WSM to be exact we are looking forward to mid range hunting.)

It’ll be good to follow your project, please keep us posted.

I too have bottom metal for a magazine fed platform in my SA 284. When I run OAL beyond 2.980, I feed single. As a hunting rifle I use the mags. Since I have a LA 284 also, I don't often run a longer OAL than fits in a mag. I think the 300 WSM is probably IMO the best option for the mile and beyond range with the 225 . The 225 Hornady's as a minimum. The A Tips look appealing until price comes into play. The 225 Hornady's are much more appealing price wise. The 230 Berger's are another option equal or better than the Hornady.

I know you can do it with 7mm's, but I would be going with a 30 caliber. Is the Savage Stealth action you have a large or small shank?

I thought that all savage Stealth models had the large shank but I just looked at it again and my rifle has the longer barrel nut, which is the small shank. Any savage experts know if this is a Savage option or if that means someone swapped the action into this chassis in the past?

If you want something different, there is this cartridge called 6.5 Creedmoor that would work for you.

But if I was you, I'd go with the 6.5 PRC.
I like being able to feed from the mag. If you gonna single load, your options are endless.

time to chime in...... if you're not opposed to full hand loading, spin up a 25 saum. you'll run a lighter bullet with equal ballistics to the heavies with far less recoil. The 131 Blackjack bullet will run alongside if not pull away from some of the traditional LR bullets, and do so with less recoil. That SAUM case can run the 131 up past 3300fps easily, which makes for a light recoil ELR rig.

Are you looking to get a prefit barrel? A small shank WSM or the likes will be hard to come by, at least they used to be.

Thanks everyone for input. I talked to Northland and he can get a small shank wsm but I'm going to wait a bit. I'll figure something out in the spring time. I will update this post if I decide to build on this action.

I would not build a WSM on a small shank. The case diameter is real big and I think you would an issue with extraction and sizing. I feel there isn't enough steel to keep the shank from expanding during firing. Matt

Im pretty sure all the stealths came with the large shank.. i would say someone put a different barreld action in the stealth chassis

I've had three 6.5wsm, and two 26 Nosler barrels in small shank actions. No extraction issues nor case life problems.

Bugholes, Mcgowen, PacNor, Prefered Barrel blanks will chamber for small shank ,no problem.
