Shooting Tripod Discussion & Education

I've searched a few threads, but didn't get a lotta answers.

Specific things I'm seeking:
  • Inexpensive (this is for extremely casual use & I totally understand buy once/cry once)
  • Sturdy
  • Clamp compatible
  • ARCA compatible
I've looked at the BOG stuff and knock-off Amazon models. This Chinese thing caught my eye: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0D3WQD8HR/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A36Y85IR0EV7L9&psc=1

But -- since I'm ignorant on the whole tripod thing, I cannot tell if I can just swap out a "head" and put something to clamp onto an ARCA rail.

Heck, even looking at BOG's site, it doesn't look as easy as "plug-n-play" to swap from a rifle clamp to an ARCA compatible mount. https://www.boghunt.com/deathgrip_quiz/blind-hunting/deathgrip-tripod/1099442.html#start=1

Then, there's this that is ARCA, but WTH do I mount it to? https://www.amazon.com/CAVIX-Tripod...ocphy=9198699&hvtargid=pla-2296047674764&th=1

Or, there's the reverse idea here: ARCA tripod... Can I replace some parts and make it so this will grip a rifle stock? https://www.amazon.com/FANAUE-Iight...efix=rifle+tripod+arca,electronics,101&sr=1-3

Sorry this thread is so backasswards. Obviously, this is somewhat difficult to convey. The more I look at mounts & adapters, the more lost I get.

I will probably get flamed immediately but I do not like the clamp style. They are a pain to use and I dont like the stability they offer. If you dont know any better it wont bother you but after using one and trying an ARCA clamp in or bag I think you will agree.

ARCA needs to have an ARCA rail mount on your gun. Much better platform but I still do not prefer this as it has limitations in movement at times. Waaayyy better than clamp style.

I prefer a heavy fill schmedium or full size game changer bag (armageddon gear) on top of the plain base or on an ARCA table top. Small flat surface that attaches to the ARCA mount. This is due to ten years of PRS shooting and is personal preference. ARCA and bags are about 50/50 for what I see in PRS. If you worry about leaving a gun unattended this may not be for you.

Buy the largest diameter legs you can afford and make sure its high enough to use it for binos/spotter. I have 3 piece legs but would like to upgrade to the 2 piece. If you are going to be knealing or possibly sitting you will need 3 piece. I prefer a tall bipod for these positions.

I made a simple Arca clamp adapter for my BOG.

Im in tripod paralysis. There are just too many to choose from, and none of them are cheap. I did figure out the clamp probably is not for me. An arca for my guns that I can easily put a rail on and a tac table with a smedium bag for my other guns is all I have been able to settle on.

I ran my rifles on my manfrotto 290 for a while with a cheap ball head with arca.
With a light AR it wasn’t bad it was definitely not as stable as I wanted not surprisingly as most rifles are beyond is load ratings.

Upgraded to an innorel 90 and 70mm ball head.
Rated for almost 90 pounds even my 338 is pretty good on it.
This performs really close to a RRS tripod setup which I just can’t swing the on at the moment.

About 25 years ago or so, I switched from a bipod to simple cross sticks (I designed my own) for hunting all matter of critters. I shoot sitting off a lightweight sportsman's chair. To date I have taken 2,014 ground hogs, over 100 predators and several white tail deer off this system.

While it took some time and a lot of dedicated practice and technique development to get where I wanted performance wise, it proved to be the ideal solution for a field shooting aid, at least for me. I can hunt any terrain, and the system is lightweight and highly portable. I can stalk or post up.

PS: My sticks are made out of 1/2" solid aluminum rod with 12" of auto heater hose at each end to protect the stock and keep the rifle stable in the V of the sticks. I ground a point on each end to provide a secure hold in the ground. The sticks are bound together with 3/4" Velcro. I can adjust the height of my hold by simply moving the spread on the sticks. Sitting on the chair, I have 4 points of contact, elbow on knees, feet flat on ground. Holding the sticks with my left hand and locked into my shoulder, it's a fairly steady position.

I have been using my homemade shooting sticks for nearly 20 years now. Looking for something more stable when I don't need to walk far or just target shooting.

I run a RRS Soar Anvil 30 ball head on one of the cheap tripods from Hog Saddle. Also have one of their pig saddle clamps that I bolted a pic rail section to on the bottom. This allows me to clamp directly to rifles with either Arca or Picatinny rails. For traditional stocks, I use the pig saddle. I agree with others that the pig saddle isn’t nearly as nice as the direct mounts. Plus it’s one more thing to forget at home/ carry in the field. I’ll likely upgrade tripods to something nicer & lighter eventually, but my set-up functions just fine.

Oh yeah - I really like the rauch precision tripod hammock. Super convenient place to store gear and even put your feet up on.

I have a Bogen (Manfrotto) video tripod with a fluid head I adapted to ARCA mount. That's super steady and the fluid head will either lock or allow smooth movement. I've also been playing around with a gimbal mount that wasn't very expensive, also adapted to ARCA.

I have Leofoto that I liked ( $400 ) but then I tried a Fatboy ( $1000 ) and it is great. The Leo has a ballhead and Fat has a leveling head. Both are arca swiss clamp so a rail needs to be attached to the gun. I had a couple others before these but they not quite up to the task.

The Innorel 90 is a very good tripod for the money and as stable as they come. I personally recommend putting the rifle on a table and bag vs the clamping in option. The table/bag combination does not require any mods or additions to the rifle and, with practice, can be very accurate.

Knowing what I know now if I wanted as much stability for the least money.
Something like an innorel 80 with bowl adapter option ($235) and a field optics research fixed arca/picatinny clamp for the bowl leveling head($80)

Certainly not ideal for high angle shooting with it's limited travel but that's not a common use for most and still achievable with some leg adjustment.
