Shooting safety glasses?

While searching online for info about shooting safety glasses I stumbled upon several stories of people with their reloading/shooting accidents with pictures of their injuries. These people had their faces burnt up with shrapnel in their faces and eyes! It was a real wake up! Scared the crap out of me! I work in manufacturing and use my cheap work safety glasses while shooting. I hate them because they are scratched up, uncomfortable and fog up in the summer heat. I will be honest, I dont always wear them, but for now on I will ALWAYS wear safety glasses! After seeing those pics it really made me think.....what if ???

I want to spend some money on some good safety/shooting/sporting glasses. Also need a pair for boating. If one pair could do both jobs then that would be great. What are some good brands? Does Oakley make any sporting glasses with the proper safety rating for shooting? Let me hear it guys. Thanks.

The reason that your industrial safety glasses get scratched so easily is that they are usually made of polycarbonate. The GE trade name is Lexan and Bayer trade name is Makrolon. Polycarbonate is very tough, but soft and subject to scratching. also chemicals especially acetone, lacquer thinner and the like will soften it, make it sticky and turn it cloudy.

I use a pair of Decot frames left over from my shotgun days. I went to my local optomitrist and asked him for a light plastic safety lens other than polycarbonate and he ordered something for me. I can't remember what the name of the plastic was, but it was not the CR 39 lenses. The bifocal lenses were about $160.

Decot does not make safety glasses. They make great glasses for shooters but, unfortunately, they are not safety rated. I recommend buying industrial grade safety glasses. If you need prescription glasses, buy them through your optician. If you don't, then buy them from one of the industrial supply houses or off of the internet.

I have a pair of Revision safety glasses. $130.00 a pair. But then again, what's your eyesight
worth.

Another +1 for ESS. They were the only ones who could get a prescription in the frame shape I was looking for. Plus, safety rated! ;D

I shoot in Wiley X glasses. Rated for high velocity impact and look pretty good: http://ads.midwayusa.com/product/269195/wiley-x-xl-1-advanced-shooting-glasses-smoke-and-clear-lenses

I shoot $6 ANSI impact-rated Remington shooting glasses available from Walmart. You can get a good, clear, safety-rated set of glasses for less than $10. This approach allows me to treat the glasses as disposable. Got a scratch? No problem, just throw them away and pull out the next $6 set.
