Shooting practices and proper shoulder mounting, gun torque

Just curious, how many people do we have that free recoil shot their rifles, 308 or similar classes.

Shooting with a bi-pod, F/TR, do you try and shoot it with little to no shoulder tension?

Or do you put pressure on your shoulder and put firm backwards pressure on the forearm of the rifle while holding your POA.

Just wondering, I see a lot of open shooter who just use a little shoulder contact. Hard to tell with the F/TR shooters.

My main concern, does the torque of the gun affect your POA?

Using a Benchrest type setup is a different story

Having a good front rest with the rifle mounted correctly is more forgiving shooting with little to no tension.

Shooting with a bi-pod, you must have tension on the rifle, shoulder and the forearm of the rifle?

Makes sense, more opinions/facts welcomed.

I have heard of fellows preloading the legs of Harris bipods, pushing the rifle forward to stress the legs opposite the direction of recoil. Of course this would probably not apply to specialty F-Class bipods with skis on the bottom of their legs, and legs that do not fold.

Hi Dennis, I've been working up loads for a new 6.5X47, 8.0 twst, 26" Criterion, Med Varmint contour, Lam. stock, 3/4 lb of lead in mag well. W/ 123 gr SMK's this rifle torques more than any of my other rifles off a Harris Bi-pod. This goes against the advice of other shooters, but I found that free recoil really tightened groups. I tried all the methods outlined above & more. Each time I returned to free recoil the rifle immediately started shooting bug holes, go figure. So far, I've only shot off a bench w/ fairly tight packed rear Bunny bag. Experimenting w/ various "hold" techniques might be the best answer. No way questioning other contributers, just my .02 ..... Boyd,

That is how I did it, when I was shooting a lil bit of F/TR way back before it got popular. Preload the Harris bipod.

Interesting: I know shooting my 338 Edge and 308's you must pre-load the rifle or your groups will be all over the place. I have tried it both ways.

My 223 and 6br are ok without pre-loading, but my 6BRX requires a little pre-load.
