Shooting positions, rifle choice

There's a fun match I'd like to shoot. One of the required guns is a Semiauto Centerfire rifle. I don't own one. I'm a high elbow shooter and AR is not for me. If you were shooting at small targets at 200 standing what would you use?

Crickets! Is that. Because its AR or nothing?

Among semi-autos? Probably. The ARs are VERY tough to beat for this type of thing. Among Service Rifle shooters, I think most of us find that the M14(M1A) are very comfortable guns to shoot offhand. Lot tougher to get consistent accuracy out of these than with an AR, and you won’t keep it that way nearly as long. Nature of the beast.

Just throwing it out there. I think Volquartzen still makes a semiauto center fire. I had one for a few years and it was a very accurate rifle. Very capable of small targets out past 200.

Just curious why is a semiauto required? What kind of match is this?

1) It's not even been 12 hours yet. People work.

2) I suggest you try to get over the '...not an AR guy...' thing. I wouldn't use an AR in Africa same as I wouldn't use a .500 NE in rapid fire competition.

Match the platform to it's intended use, and then work on making the shooter use that platform to it's potential.

I'm at work. I don't have time for this site when I'm off. Hahaha.

AR is really the obvious, and only logical answer here. You are most likely a “high elbow” shooter because you are not shooting an AR. With an AR, the angle of the pistol grip makes it so that you don’t have to do the chicken wing anymore. You use a lot less muscle with your right arm resting against your rib cage than you do holding it way up in the air to get the right grip angle. Using less muscle when shooting is good.

Yep chicken wing shooter here. I'll adapt. Doubt there's anything else with magazine capacity also.

Mini 14? Probably not likely to have the accuracy needed. But here in NY after the "safe act" quite a few guys started shooting the mini 14, as well as a few guys with a Garand. These were just local fun matches but just go shoot and have a good time. We actually had a Garand with it irons come in 3rd at the last local match. Someone will most likely be willing to let you try their rifle if you needed. At least that's how it is in my area.

Also there are stock options for the AR15 that is closer to a traditional rifle. Do a Google search for NY compliant AR.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Trust me, an ar is the most ergonomic for offhand. Even the guys that shoot bolt guns use emissions chassis or rubber guns which mimic an ar

Buffer goes diagonally through the stock via a proprietary angled bolt carrier.
I guess it's basically an 1100 shotgun stock and they work that way.
Can use any AR upper but only with their bolt carrier.

Ares / Fightlite SCR

The AR is one of the most ergonomic rifles this side of a dedicated match/free rifle.

Hiking your elbow up in the air is counterproductive to good Offhand shooting.
