Shooting pistol from rest

What's the best way to shoot a pistol off a rest? Hands on the rest or laying barrel on the rest/sandbag, for revolvers or pistols?

I generally just support my wrists. Anything with real recoil can cause you to pinch your hands under the butt if supporting the hands on a bag and possibly promote flinching. Recoil impulse from the revolver or pistol tends to cause erratic groups when resting on the frame or barrel. Also, revolver cylinder gaps can generate enough escaping gas to quickly flame-cut bags. When sighting for field use I usually use the seated position on the ground with my back supported and my forearms braced by the inside of my upraised knees.

A lot of the time I will sit with my back against the tire of my truck, with elbows on my knees. With revolvers sometimes I will use this position and rest the barrel on a tripod set of shooting sticks. Works pretty well. With semi autos I rest my elbows on my knees and squeeze them off, or rest the heel of my hands on the bench, along with my arms. Basically laying prone on the bench with my arms, if that makes sense.

As suggested by Tom above;

One thing you can try is instead of "just" isolated movements on your rig,is your core/upper body movement. And there's a bunch of ways to do this so experiment,be creative.

Another tangent but can not be stressed enough is "real" grip strength. Hate sayin this as it comes off holier but,forget gym muscles. Swing an axe or maul splitting wood. It's the combination of "required" grip strength with hand/eye accuracy. It also strengthens your core. Pushing a wheelbarrow full of the now split wood does the same. You're having to "balance" the load as well as providing motion.

Good luck with your project.

I use an old MTM rest that has rubber in the fork up front and is very adjustable, I am a firm believer that the bottom of the grip shouldn't touch anything. Gary

It depends on the handgun. I have shot my 6" 686 S&W with a heavy add-on underlug and 4X scope by resting the underlug on a rest and the but on a bag. It would shoot 1-1/2" five shot groups at 50 yards with cast bullet handloads. The bag on the rest did turn black but it survived.

Has anyone made a revolver rest out of wood? I'd like to shoot with my arm fully supported, elbows to my wrists, with out having the grip being supported. I shot with my arms supported by just the bench the other day, but my chair was way back and I was nearly laying down to get my arms supported and my head down to see the sights. I need a little height. I was pretty steady and could see the sights pretty well also. I had a number if shots in the same hole at 25 yards. Not too bad for an almost 84 y.o. half fast rookie. A picture of what you use would really help. With a little luck I'll be shooting 'off hand' real soon. I want see where the guns shoot not my finger with out investing a small fortune. I'm trying to get rid of treasure not accumulate more.

Not very practical but for my testing purpose it does everything I wanted it to. Bipod, rear adjustable rest and stable as I'd guess possible with a revolver.

When I do shoot a more regular pistol off a rest it's usually jammed up against a bag against the trigger guard and possibly the barrel. Doesn't affect any accuracy that I've seen and most of my pistol shooting is farther than most.

depends on the gun, revolvers, Contenders, and rear grip S.P.'s I normally shoot of a rest made by a member of the old Specialty Pistol forum, for center grip XP's I like a bi pod and small bag under the grip. For BR work it's like a rifle setup. muzzleloader.jpg6prc.jpgrest.jpg

I tried all manner of tests of different bench holders for shooting handguns off the bench and finally settled on using two 2x6s screwed and glued into an L, with a V cut on the short leg then turned up, with padded leather from an old boot top, over the V, stapled to the wood and used a lead shot bag or two, with one bag under the grip for recoil padding. Easy to make and is very mobile. I had multiple ranges to go to, so wanted something easy to transport, tough and easy to use. I have used this one for about 30 years.
I am frugal, being a Scott, so....

This is the shot he made off his knees using my wife's bench. He was on the hill with us that day.
