Shooting opportunities around Sioux Falls

I’ve been offered a position that I really cannot refuse. Working for great people that have been friends for 20 years. The position is currently above my experience level, but they are willing to train me on the job, the potential to move up is mostly limited by my own dedication and ambition. The job is flying corporate, starting out in a Pilatus PC-12, and Cessna Caravan amphib. I’ve flown both already, but not enough to mean anything. There is the potential to move up to the jets, and there is a DC-3, that I’d get to fly now and then.
It’s really not a difficult decision, but I’ve lived in the mountains since I was 16, I love the mountains and all they have to offer. In order to not go out of my mind when not flying, I’d need to find something to occupy my time, Like shooting.
I’d like to shoot long range, informal defensive pistol, clays, etc. I’m assuming there are some ranges in the area?

Anyone one on here around Sioux Falls?

I’m not sure what’s available in South Dakota. There are ranges north of there in North Dakota and south in eastern Nebraska. East of there by Des Moines also.

Hunters Pointe Shooting Complex is 20 miles west just off I-90 south of Humboldt exit 379.
They are geared more towards sporting clays but also have a pistol range along with a rifle range out to 600 yards.
I couldn't speak to the pistol or shotgun competition opportunities there but they hold 6 IBS 600 yard matches over 3 weekends.
They hosted the 2020 IBS 600 yard Nationals.

Dave already mentioned the local long distance range - if you have any other questions send me a PM I live near Sioux Falls and am happy to help answer any questions.

Get ready for a climate shock. That humidity is miserable. No public land East of the river in SD. Sioux Falls has been steadily growing though, it’s huge now. Take a plane west to shoot?

In addition to the Hunters Pointe range there are IBS matches at Harris Mn. and Elbow Lake Mn. Harris shoots 600 and 1000 yd Ibs and Fclass matches Elbow Lake shoots IBS 600. A little longer trip would be Vapor Trail in Spickard Mo shooting both 600 and 1000 YD.

If you want to give 600 a try I will provide a complete setup for a match. PM me

Thanks

I know the area is going to be a shock, but the opportunity is once in a lifetime.
Perhaps it will be a shock… but the opportunity doesn’t have to last for your lifetime… those willing to seek opportunity often find more present themselves!

I'm in Sioux Falls. We have a very good 100-200 private range here...Dakota Benchrest Shooters, of which I'm on the B.O.D. When you get here, I'd be happy to show you around there.

20 minutes East of Sioux Falls is Garretson S.D., home of the very nice Garretson Sportsmans club.

There are quite a few public walk in areas in Eastern South Dakota for pheasant and waterfowl hunting.

Hope this helps. -Al

No public land East of the river in SD.
You might want to check the facts before posting stuff like this.

In Minnehaha County alone (where Sioux Falls is), there are 40 (f-o-u-r-t-y) public hunting areas. Add in the surrounding counties (within an hours drive of Sioux Falls) and there are close to 200 public hunting areas.

For anyone interested, I've included a link to the S.D. G.F.P. maps for public hunting areas. Just click on the county you wish to search and open the file.

I’m not talking about a little walk in area to shoot pheasants on 300 acres. I’m talking about being able to go for miles in any direction, able to shoot rifles, not shot guns. East river might be the Wild West depending on a guy’s perspective. To me it’s jail.

The statement...

Is simply incorrect.

Now, it may not be your idea of "public land". But that's another matter entirely.

Respectfully, -Al
Okay sorry, very few small pieces of land for public access for shooting rifles compared to west river. To some it might be a lot of room to roam. That better :D

I know you said shooting ranges. HOWEVER, you are close to some of the best prairie dog shooting in the world. Check out the SD National Grasslands around Pierre and westward. I'd also make some friends with some ranchers out that way.
