anyone tried shooting in extreme wind ?

got wind here in Iceland that is about 150mph in gusts, average about 85mph..

horizontal bar is the time of day, vertical is wind speed in meters per second m/s

I googled Sandy's wind speed and it maxed about 89mph...

I have shot in some pretty stiff winds here in new york state as it is windy most of the time. I went out a few weeks back with 40 mph gusts and sustained 25 mph winds. I actually did pretty well and it was an interesting challenge.

I never had the desire to shoot in that kind of wind velocity! So, I cannot speak to specifics....but I can comment on some general principles.

All I can add is that the DIRECTION of the wind has a lot to do with your reported elevation changes. A wind direction angling out of your right will add elevation to your POI, all other factors being the same. Obviously, the longer the distance, the mean velocity of the wind, the caliber/muzzle velocity, the ballistics of the bullet, and the degree of full value wind from the right, all will influence a elevated POI.

Generally, the opposite POI movement can be the case with a wind out of you left.

Good luck on how much windage you will have to dial in a 90 mph full value wind.

JBM......308, 175 MatchKing, 2600 fps, 1,000 yards....

10 mph 90*
Elevation 414.1"
Wind 98.4"

90 mph 90*
Elevation 414.3"
Wind 886.2"

90 mph 270*
Elevation 414.3"
Wind 886.2"

Maybe I did something wrong, but it doesn't show a difference from right to left value. The additional drop is expected as the bullet flight is longer in the higher winds. Maybe I left something out, or the JBM doesn't take into account right from left and bullet spin......or maybe the distance isn't great enough to account for a difference.

Correct me if I'm wrong and please add how much the elevation would be off and how to calculate it......Thanks.

Best Regards......George

Edit: BugMan.....Sorry, I misread your reply, thinking you were implying a full value wind left verses right. Rereading, I'm sure you meant a less than full value wind from front to back......is that correct?

With those wind, you would have a hard time staying on the firing mound or chasing your equipment downwind :-)

BTW, with wind greater than 15mph, and if you're shooting from a sling, the wind will move your rifle and increase you wobble area by two to three times.

No! That's the time to break out the FAMOUS GROUSE scotch and live to shoot another day and not waste ammo!!

I take a shot a day no matter what the conditions, so I've shot in high winds many times.

60mph was the fastest.

You are a smart man Steve. There is absolutely no valid reason to shoot in those conditions. They may even call time out during war.

I would look forward to shooting in 90 mph winds......just because I can and may. At my home range during the spring winds if I didn't shoot in 50 mph winds I wouldn't get much shooting in for a couple months of the year. I know 50 isn't 90, and 60 mph is the strongest wind I have shoot in at steel silhouette rams. The wind was strong and predictable.....it was an interesting shoot.

I fully understand why some would not care to shoot in raw weather, but for me, it is a great time to launch lead.
