Shooting benches

Have you ever sat at a shooting bench and everything was perfect.
Meaning, the bench was the proper hight, the seat was the proper hight, the bench was long enough,
Every bench ive ever shot from has had issues.
Or what about the bouncy benches when some one shoots at the other end it messes up your shot haha..those are fantastic.

Ive been studying concrete style shooting benches on google images.
And even those are all goofy looking.
Some are a tombstone shape
Some u shape (i like those)
Most have that weird corner scalloped out. That serves absolutely no purpose for me.
I see guys all the time balled up and trying to shoot a 5000$ rifle off some goofy bench that doesnt fit
Its soo frustrating.
Then i see these sono-tube and large concrete top benchs you could rebuild Cummins engine on.
Thats what im looking for..i want real-estate room to spread out , i dont want my front rest , or bi-pod teetering off the edge of a short bench. I dont want to be so cramped im knock brass off my bench...
So what i came up with to combat this mathematical vortex.
I set up a set of saw horses in my driveway with a sheet of 3/4 ply on top.
I brought out my adjustable desk chair
I grabbed my rifle rest set up i use,
My bi-pods, and a few rifles.
Note book , pencil, tape measure, 2' level.
After shimming up my wobbly set up i leveled the make shift table.
I set up in my chair behind the rifle..100% comfortable, no balling up cramped for space
And started taking measurements.
Hahahaha. If you have done this and i think you should. Take a good look at the bench you need, vs. what is available at most shooting clubs and you will laugh also..and think..Oooooh..thats a problem, and explains alot

The dimensions i need from bench to seat, the
Distance and hight is never anything like i need.
Hight off ground to top of bench. Once rest and rifle is set up..has been way way off for me.
Just everything.
Nothing has ever been made spicific for me and my shooting position.
I like to shoot from behind the rifle, that strange off to the side position is a no go for me.
I just found the reality of what i need to build is completely different then what ive always had to shoot from.
And the more i prepare for my project the more excited i become.
It will be amazing to shoot from a custom made rock solid bench.
Still not sure if i want to use the sono tubes or block.
Pour a pad for two benches or use stone.
It would be great if this project had a beginning and an end (its finished! ) but im sure it will be a work in progress..that drives me crazy.

If you have done this project already i could use more concrete shooting bench photos and maybe why you built it as you did.

I dont claim to be a know it all. And could miss something important.
Im thinking the best thing to do is pour a pad build the benches and use 2 adjustable desk chairs..they are comfortable. And it will be under roof of some kind.
Ive posted a few photos for reference
Had to post funny bench picture.
As it directly relates to proper bench dimensions

Here is the link to the work I did this year on a concrete bench sitting just outside my basement. It's not perfect, but it works great for what I need. For a stool, I just bought a 2x12 and made a stool that fit me.

Hope this helps some.

(For giving us a place to shoot)
Nothing at my gun club was given.
Membership is expensive, and comes with lots of responsibilities. commitments, duties that must be done on club schedule
It wasnt always fun thats for sure.
It takes alot of helping hands and hard work to keep a gun club beautiful..it doesnt happen by it self.
Let alone all the events, dinners. Our gun club is a happening place. There is always something going on almost every week
Our club Is almost spotless..the shooting benches are a disaster and all need to go in a burn pile if ya ask me.
To have a place so beautiful and wobbly falling apart benches
Ya cant have it all.
Im not complaining one bit...i absolutely love being part of a gun club. The people and food are fantastic..and the guns are just a by product

There is alot..to be said about a good shoot-n bench..
Longrangebanker built a beautiful beautiful addition to his patio. His bench looks awesome..

You could even use a big umbrella like for picnic table.
Clamp it to side of bench for hot sunny days or misty rain days..when not in use hang on wall behind shed or something.

The seat has about 12" of vertical adjustment with a piece of all thread and swivals from side to side.

Oh ive seen those. They look nice..will USPS or UPS drop them off on my porch
They are located in Colorado, and im in NY hahaha
I dont think a few stamps are gonna cut it.
But i do like those. Haha..

Nice and clean looks like with some primer they will last a life time.
The cold concrete seat will definitely need a cushion.. thats like sitting in a tree stand bitter cold day freezing your tush off

This was my first retirement project. Not adjustable but it fits me. Most important detail to me is BIG and bench is NOT fastened to table in any way.
Safe shooting
Doug

In 27+ yrs of IBS Score Match competition and countless practice sessions, I've shot off a number of different style, wooden, wooded and concrete, and concrete benches.

For my money a "home plate" shaped, concrete top , with steel pipe, sono-tube, or cinder block legs, works the best. For height, around 31"-33" seems to be about right also. For a seat I use an adjustable drummer stool, so it easy to set it to the height I need.

In all that time, I have yet to shoot off a wooden bench that didn't have the "wobbles." Some are so bad you can't even touch them. So you can get on target and while not touching them or the rifle, just squeeze off the shot.

Or you can lean into them, get on target, and stay leaning while releasing the shot. Any let up, or change in position, will send the shot to who-the-Hell knows where.

Wooden benches can be made a lot less woobley by "corner blocking" i. e., attaching triangular shaped pieces of 2"X4" or 2"X6" at critical joints that have the most movement. Where the legs go under front and the sides, is a good example. So in general, any time you can reinforce a joint, it can only help

Why is it that most position those T type benches with the long and narrow part facing the shooter? Little, if any room, IMO , to square up directly behind the rifle. MUCH prefer the type with the center indentation for the shooter with wings on either side.

Weight and size/portability are my criteria, since I pack the bench out live varmint shooting 15-20 trips a year. The 2026 Model is based on a Black&Decker bench with an Ironing Board shaped top insert and a drum stool like the one shown here by rjgonzo. The insert is a two by ten with lightening holes drilled and the top is 1" plywood. I am hoping weight with be less than 25 pounds and will stow in the Jeep Grand Cherokee I bought a year ago.
