Shooting bench question

PopCharlie

I started with nothing. I still have some left.

I shoot at a range local to me that only has a 100 yard rifle range. The bench is a single, long bench that will accomodate 6 shooters. 3 of these positions have a "bump out" to accomodate bench rests. However, the wooden benches flex alot. If there is another shooter, you must time your shots to avoid vibrations from the other shooters firing. This set up adds to the challenge of getting precisley aimed shots off. Is it worth getting a portable bench from Legacy or Stukys? The firing line will accomodate a portable bench. I don't like blaming equipment for my lack of skill, but I'm at a point where I want to try a different bench. Any thoughts?

We have concrete benches and during matches with shooters on both sides while I'm trying to aim and they shoot my gun moves from the vibration of each shot, it is quite challenging to try and time your shots so they aren't affected by this so not sure a portable bench is your answer. I have ask other shooters about this and pretty much all say the same thing. I'f I'm dead on target and someone next to me fires my aiming point will change as I'm looking through the scope.

Yes it is worth it, the local range had 2 shooters sitting on one picnic table and nothing is worse than someone shaking the bench. Just make sure you get a good one, most are shaky but at least you are the only one moving the bench. I have made 4 or 5 benches for my self and friends with table legs like the fold up tables from church or the tables at the gun show. These are not sturdy enough. I can't tell you what is but when you make your decision post it here so we can see.

A legacy bench is your best bet. It took a real rocket scientist to come up with a multiple person shooting bench or to even think that was a good idea

Can you cut a few pieces of 2x4 and wedge them under the existing bench to stabilize your portion? PITA, but cheaper than buying a bench.

Yes, I could try that. I even have the 2x4s. Problem is the bench sits too high to us a chrono.

The legs only need threads on one end just get the 36 inch from Homley-Depot and cut them off to make the bench the height you need. I have never shot off of a drummers stool, i have a fold up chair the works but it is in sorry shape. I had a 5 gallon bucket with a padded top that worked OK but the stool sounds like the ticket.

Just go down to ACE Hardware and they will cut and thread them for you. Homedepot stocks 36 inch legs. Any pipe supply house will cut and thread them.
You must still be in a good area. Most stores won’t cut anything anymore, let alone thread it. Too much liability and laziness nowadays.

I bought a portable caldwell light shooting table.. was ok but wasnt solid enough. So i took 2 layers of 3/4 inch plywood and glued and screwed them together then took the plastic top off the caldwell light and replaced it with the plywood.. works nice now. Still folds up like it originally did and can still carry it with one hand.. works for me..
