shooting bags: leather vs cordura...... let me hear it

The only problem with leather was when one uses talcum powder on them they get (gummy) in high humidity. This problem goes away if Sinclairs bag wax or used dryer sheets are used on the ears. Bag shape and particularly the shape of the ears (amount of sand fill is a big factor here) matching the stocks profile are far more important.

i was wondering, it seems to me that with leather changes in humidity and temperature have more affect on the force to move a gun in a leather bag but you see some accomplished shooters using leather and i was wondering if there were other factors that leather had benefit over cordura

I have a 3" Edgewood codura bag on my Sinclair front rest. It does not hold its shape well, and sometimes the stock is tilted slightly. So, I recently went back to using my old Bald Eagle leather bag, and I can see improvement already. I powder it, but the use of a dryer sheet is a good suggestion.

From my findings Cordura can hold dust and junk in and scrach nice painted and lamintaed stocks. I shoot a cordura from bag and a laeather ear rear bag. I follow what Mike Ratigan posted in his book that cordura feels alive, and fells like it moves more.

My favorite is the fabric SEB uses in his front rests and rear ears. It is a dark, tight-weave polymer with a silk-like finish. I've found it has very low friction even without use of powder, silicon spray, or other additives. It is less rigid than Cordura. Because of the tight weave, I don't think it embeds grit as easily as Cordura.

Just used my new SEB rear bag over the weekend for the 1st time. I sure do like those slick ears. I shot better then I do with my other bag. Very happy with it .

I use HBN on my bag ears. I can't tell any difference between leather and cordura.

Speaking of high humidity, I live in Louisiana and I like all leather bags (front and rear). If one uses pure talc there is no gumminess. The problem comes when their "talc" is a mixture of talc, corn starch and other additives. Good shooting...James

What about Teflon tape? I used some 3" wide stuff on the forearm then cut it in half lengthwise and put that on the rear of the stock. Very slick on a leather bag!

nar0107,
You didn't mention what discipline you shoot or if you were talking about the front or rear bag, or both.

For F-Class, I prefer the cordura ears. At summer matches in the Midwest, the temperatures are in the high 90s to 100+ degrees with high humidity. Sweat runs down right onto the ears of my rear bag. Leather bags get sticky and can cause vertical flyers.

This might not be a problem when shooting from the bench.
