Shooting after skin cancer

Ya'll seem more worried about it than I am. Other than covering up and using some common sense...I ain't changing anything. One day, they'll claim it was caused from shooting!

Right now, it's tobacco. My dad died of lung cancer 20 odd years after stopping smoking. He also had serious exposure to 2,4-d and paraquat..essentially, agent orange, farming all his life. They didn't want to hear about what that did. They only wanted to talk about what he stopped doing 20 plus years ago. Not saying they are wrong but there is so much they don't know or won't admit to that it's beyond crazy now.

Oh...you were exposed to agent orange for most of your life, as opposed to a 2 year enlisted...but you smoked 20 plus years ago.

Their conclusion..smoking.

Hmmmmm

grew up a sun worshipper in SoCal, then the Florida Keys before 4 years with my back to the sun in residential construction. I got somewhat smart about 25 years ago and started to cover up and wear a wide brimmed hat when outdoors. Had my first skin tumor removed just over a year ago and now see my dermatologist 2x/year for scans. So far, just the one. There's a cancer gene in my family (skin cancer for my grandma and mom, breast cancer for my sister), so I've become a bit zealous after my first diagnosis at age 69.

Best wishes for a good outcome.

I've had several spots cut off/out from my younger and dumber days. Now I wear long sleeve fishing shirts with the hoods and a baseball cap, fly fishing gloves and those lightweight fishing pants as well during the summer/warmer months. Skin doc still cuts or freezes a spot or two off every year. You should NOT stop doing what you enjoy, just be a bit smarter about doing what you enjoy.

As of now 4 different types. All a result of Agent Orange exposure. Been since 1991 the first was discovered. Roughly 75 operations and procedures on my face. Over 175 on my forearms. Big numbers. I never stopped shooting. Nor did anyone tell me too.
Thank you for your service. Agent Orange has caused the loss of a friend I used to ride with. I hope our government has treated you right.

Sunscreen is your friend. Wide brim hats. And if you can, get windows tinted in your vehicle with film that blocks UV. I have more damage on the left side of my face (drivers side) than the right.

I haven’t changed shooting habits per se, but I’m a lot more aware of sun hitting my face. I carry something to block it if stand hunting. My bench is built under a carport.

Fortunately, the last 20 plus years of work, I wore long sleeve shirts.

Your dermatologist can prescribe Fluorouracil cream that can work on damage and pre cancers before they get to the surgery stage.

Provided you go…… A pity there aren’t more PSA about the dangers of skin cancers to help mitigate it among the young and ignorant.

I have had 6 MOHS surgeries in the last five years. Two more scheduled on my left cheek next week. I am a right side shooter. So the only time I will miss is the surgery time. Good luck

It is good you have those childhood memories. They are worth a little inconvenience later in life. Just stay on top of examinations. Every biopsy I've had was cancer positive. Skin cancer is a slow grower

Stop me, NO. Just use a little sun screen and light clothing to cover more skin than I used to, also went to a wide brim hat, per doctor's advice and just continue enjoying my varmint/sun outtings. I will add I am now 85 and still shooting and going into the sunlight.

Take a 500 MG dose of Niacinimide twice dailey. The pill—the vitamin B3 supplement called nicotinamide or niacinimide (they are the same)—cut the rate of new squamous-cell and basal-cell skin cancers by 23% compared with placebo after 1 year among patients at high risk for skin cancer. Nicotinamide also reduced the risk for developing actinic keratosis, a common precancer of the skin.

My dermatologist said to use sunscreen and be sure to put it inside your ears. I thought that was weird until a friend had to spend a couple of hours having them dig skin cancer out of his ear canal.

My Skin Guy is cover up and Good Sun Screen.
Funny tomorrow at 1:30 more work on area #3. For me it comes out on my legs ?
The first spot was very high, area covered by underwear,go figure. At 77 they check me every 6 months.
Best of Luck do what the Doctor tells us..

was told by my derma that it was what you did before you were 20 that sets the course. unfortunately (?) i had a wonderful childhood at a cottage on a lake.... swimming all day was not out of the question...
Bad sunburns as a kid started it for me. Working in the sun and chasing a tan helped it along. I figured if you were tan, you wouldn’t get burned…

I grew up sailing in California every summer age 9-16, and rode bikes 5 miles to/from school without sun protection. And I did sailing again after law school for 12 years. Now at 68 I've had six MOHs surgeries, four on the face. The last was pretty significant, requiring a plastic surgeon to close a hole bigger than a nickel.

The sun damage catches up to you. But the good news is that all the MOHs have been very successful. I recommend that anybody who has had a lot of sun exposure find a GOOD dermatologist and get looked at -- FULL BODY -- at least twice a year.

I stress that that doctor must look at every inch of your body. In our local sailing club a 45-year-old Dad died of cancer when a Melanoma between his toes was not seen, and it metastasized.

A lot of us have overcooked ourselves over the years and didn't take it seriously. I am no exception, and it wasn't until I had to have an ear trimmed that it really came home to me. Now, I pay a little more attention. The truth is, like many of us, I have passed my "Best Before" date, and am entering the life stage where all those old chickens come home to roost. WH
