I hope this is in the correct section, but here we go:
I had made up my mind to purchase a different rifle for BR shooting, but do to some responses from members here, there may be some things I can do improve my current gear.
Goal: shoot up to 500 yards with acceptable accuracy
My most successful setup to date:
Rem 700 VSSF II,no custom work)
.22-250 cal
Winchester brass, Win LR primers, flash holes deburred
Not sorted by weight or neck thickness.
Nosler 50gr ballistic spitzers
38gr Hogden 380
OAL measured with Nosler 50gr and Hornady Lock-N-Load gauge and Sinclair comparator: 3.046"
Finished cart. OAL: 3.026"
Brass cut length: 1.912"
Dillon 450 press
Redding match size die w/ .250" bushing
Redding standard seating die
2.5 pound X-Mark Pro trigger,Rem's new trigger)
Leupold VX-II 6-18x40 scope
I only size the neck the distance that the bullet seats into the neck.
Reloading steps:
tumble w/ corn cob media
deprime/neck size to .250",single bushing die)
uniform primer pocket
clean primer pocket
chamfer/deburr
brush,clean) inside of neck,I don't lubricate...maybe I should?)
measure/cut brass to length
check chamfer/debur
insert primer
measure powder,by hand/balance scale)
seat bullet
Cleaning steps using bore guide following a 60-80 round session:
Run patch w/ Sweet's
Wait 2-3 minutes
Run dry patch
Re-do, but if I am getting enough "blue", I will insert a patch w/ Sweet's just into the rifling, and drop 7 drops of Sweet's into the muzzle. Wait 5 minutes, run dry patch through until blue is gone.
Run patch w/ Butch's Bore Shine.
Run dry patch
Run patch w/ Rem Oil
Run dry patch
Notes: I don't find a benefit in using a brush. The muzzle is always lower than the receiver.
I plan on removing the expanding ball on my neck sizing die since I have read that it may effect concentricity.
Bench:
Hand made from pressure treated pine. "T" shape with 9" of all legs under ground. Very sturdy!
Shooting practice:
Trigger rests between tip and first nuckle of first finger. Pull straight back by applying pressure on stock with thumb. Shoulder touching rear of stock. Left hand applies pressure to rear sandbag. Hoppe's adjustable front rest between two sling posts, empty). Shoot 10 shots,5 per target). Next person shoots, which runs 5-10 minutes including setup. I use a shaped paper towel tube to minimize the mirage effect.
Best results:
,Nosler) 100yrds: 4/5 inside a dime...chances of a replay 1/5
Conditions: Calmest afternoon I have ever shot
The same loads did not perform well at 200 yards. No shots touched.
,Hornady V-Max)200yrds: 3/5 touching...chances of a replay 1/10
Conditions: Minor evening wind
