Shooters Forum Wisdom

I am writing this today to speak to the "Smarts" I have gained since finding this Forum. I recently was at my local range, a weekly ritual for me. We have a 300 yard maximum with earth backstops and see allot of shooters. Any way, as is the way things normally go a few of us were chatting. There was a gentleman shooting and breaking in a new Browning A-Bolt in 243 WIN. He was using new factory FC ammo. After shooting 40 rounds and going through the shooting/cleaning ritual he joined our discussion group for a while. On his leaving he asked if anyone wanted his fired brass. Being the only one there that loads and shoots 243 I gladly accepted his offer. Upon returning home I cleaned the brass in SS pins and after drying proceeded to FL size them. I checked them in a Wilson case gauge and they all fell right in. Just for the sake of trying I tried to chamber a couple of the brass in a Savage Axis I have. None of them would chamber, all got tight just before the bolt closed. Frustrating!!!
I thought about tossing the brass but instead went to this forum and started reseacrhing this problem. I came away with a a few suggestions. I first FL sized them in a RCBS 30:06 FL die without the decapping stem. After this step the necks had streched about .010 so I trimmed back to SAMMI specks and again FL sized them in a Redding 243 Win die. Going back to the AXIS everyone of them chambered with no problem. I am very happy that people are willing to share their knowledge here. I have found the shooting public to be a great group to be associated with, all the way back to the Metallic Silhouette days.

I try to thank everyone, everytime I post a question or problem that is ALWAYS answered in short order. The guys here really are great . Unlike other forums, the guys here don't ridicule or belittle anyone for what they don't know....again, a thanks to all the members here that take their time and give freely their knowledge.....

I have a question. Why did you FL them in a 30-06 FL die? That would induce more taper into the 243 case making it longer, hence the longer case in need of trimming.

Frank

Wondering the same. Seams like your 243 fl die isnt in spec or your rifle isnt in spec. Not sure ive ever hear of someone fl sizing and it not fitting unless the dir wasnt srt properly? Did you have it to the shell holder plus a 1/4 or so turn?

Yes they do help, I just posted a Leupold scope and was told it was fake and it was, I had no clue that it was, A guy needed some money and I bought it but he didn't know it was fake also, so we both took a dive. Good members on here

Frank, sorry for not responding sooner. As to why I used the :06 die it was a suggestion on this forum. I knew going in the cases would get longer but decided to try it anyway and it worked.

Does this not beg the question of what good your case gauge is doing? Kind of useless if a case that fits the gauge doesn't fit a chamber, isn't it? What, in that instance, is it gauging?

Well, I'd like to chime in as well. Just recently joined the forum myself after finding it while looking for reloading information. This site very much appears to be a great group of folks with a very large amount of knowledge, that is shared with all who ask. According to my better half, I generally ask the dumbest questions, so the knowledge I gain should work out great for me!

Nice to see you joined AND contributed in short order . Not so common these days.

I totally agree. I had the same thing happened last year with some 6BR brass. Unfortunately I'd never thought to check it out and just got rid of it

To any and all who read this ! As a former Skydiving Instructor ; I used to hear , at least once every class :"This might be a stupid question , But",.....Just like in Jumping , The only stupid question is the one NOT asked ! Boys and Girls ; Ladies and Germs . We are playing with explosives and detonators . Never be afraid to ask a question because you think it sounds stupid . Stupid is not asking , and blowing up a rifle . Losing a eye . Or worse ! That's my .02 worth on stupid questions . One of us can answer ALL those stupid questions , as most of us have already made that mistake .
