I am writing this today to speak to the "Smarts" I have gained since finding this Forum. I recently was at my local range, a weekly ritual for me. We have a 300 yard maximum with earth backstops and see allot of shooters. Any way, as is the way things normally go a few of us were chatting. There was a gentleman shooting and breaking in a new Browning A-Bolt in 243 WIN. He was using new factory FC ammo. After shooting 40 rounds and going through the shooting/cleaning ritual he joined our discussion group for a while. On his leaving he asked if anyone wanted his fired brass. Being the only one there that loads and shoots 243 I gladly accepted his offer. Upon returning home I cleaned the brass in SS pins and after drying proceeded to FL size them. I checked them in a Wilson case gauge and they all fell right in. Just for the sake of trying I tried to chamber a couple of the brass in a Savage Axis I have. None of them would chamber, all got tight just before the bolt closed. Frustrating!!!
I thought about tossing the brass but instead went to this forum and started reseacrhing this problem. I came away with a a few suggestions. I first FL sized them in a RCBS 30:06 FL die without the decapping stem. After this step the necks had streched about .010 so I trimmed back to SAMMI specks and again FL sized them in a Redding 243 Win die. Going back to the AXIS everyone of them chambered with no problem. I am very happy that people are willing to share their knowledge here. I have found the shooting public to be a great group to be associated with, all the way back to the Metallic Silhouette days.
