Shiraz - Question on Dasher Brass?

I seem to remember some info that the new Dasher brass overall case dimensions will fall within the length parameters of 6BR brass (i.e. a little longer than what you see with Dasher brass that is fire formed Lapua 6BR brass that has a tendency to shorten up during the fire forming process). Can you comment on this?

It seems to me that may be good info to know for those who will be specing out Dasher reamers in anticipation of using the Norma Dasher brass.

The older Dowling type Dasher chambers are in the "max chamber" range of 1.555" but the 6BR "max chamber" is 1.570" - - this begets the question whether one would need to trim the new Norma brass for it to fit in pre-existing Dasher Dowling style chambers.

Any info would be helpful.

Robert -

Sorry but I think you are confused here: and feel the need for clarity:
Dowlings original deal for Richard Schatz was a 1.575" (that Richard uses yet to this day).

I don't remember any Dasher chambers being 1.555" until post-2010 era (blue box days).
All prior were typically 1.565 to 1.575". My first Dasher reamers used were a 1.575 in 2004, fallowed by 1.565 in 2005 and a 1.570 in 2008.

Hope that helps

I think he mentioned previously the brass would come at roughly 1.555". Your chamber/reamer will dictate whether you will need to trim or not. If I recall correctly he wouldn't specify the exact brass dimensions because none have been made, but that they should fit in existing chambers/reamers that they sell on their website. I sure would not get a reamer made or even plan anything until you can get some actual cases in hand to take measurements of.

Sorry, I know I have a copy of a Dowling 6mm Dasher print from quite a ways back and the max chamber length was 1.555" (i.e. then end of the straight portion of the neck, not including the taper down portion from where the neck of the chamber tapers down to the bore).

Regardless, it doesn't matter what Dowling did, there are a lot of 6mm Dasher reamers out there that have a "max chamber" of 1.555" - 1.558" (a Michael Davis version, a Sam Hall version, etc.) and this worked out well for some of us because factory 6BR Lapua brass would fit in the chamber and when fire formed it would shorten up. Indeed, most of my Dasher brass (made from Lapua 6mm BR brass) fires out at around 1.542" OAL.

I am not interested in getting into a technical minutia debate with you - I'm interested in hearing from Shiraz on the real issue.

From a previous post (hopefully I copied the link correctly):

My chamber length is 1.555 as well. I thought I saw it mentioned where they were going to keep the new Dasher brass a little longer for the guys with longer chambers. The guys with the shorter chambers just could trim a little then. Matt

just sayin,,,why didnt the powers that be lengthen/extend the neck of the new Dasher brass the .100" that we loose by Dasherizing the original BR brass,,,then the neck would be long enuff (like the original BR is ) to enable more useable neck for the seating of a wider spectrum of bullets (65-107) ????,,,,,then we culd "double" Dasherize em and really stir the pot,,,,ooo yea there will be those who say 1.555 +/- .010" is what my reamer is,,,but most of the people who really compete have half a dozen reamers that have evolved over time ,,so what is one more,,,or just ream and deepen the neck throat the appropriate ammount,,,..Roger
PS,,,Lapua is thinking about Dasher brass,,so maby they will do it right,,,

Where did you hear that Lapua was "Thinking about Dasher Brass"? Sounds doubtful since they have the 6.5 x 47 case already.
However stranger things have happened! 8)

For the sake of the Dasher i hope it stays the way it is. I think it will take away from the cartridge if it becomes too mainstream.

Look at the cartridges Lapua offers. It's a pretty limited list. I don't believe this is an accident.

While the dasher might be popular among target shooters here in the US, how big a market is that? A couple thousand customers, if that? Are there any dashers in Europe (I don't really know)? Lapua likely has a good idea of the numbers.

How would dasher brass increase their sales enough to justify the costs, both real and opportunity? Wouldn't any sales of dasher brass be offset by a loss of sales for 6BR brass?

Norma doesn't seem to take the same limited approach. Their offerings are far more varied. They're also amenable to doing custom runs for customers who are willing to write a great big check (e.g. - Nosler, Shiraz). Kudos to Shiraz for getting a deal done.

ps - Lapua doing 300 blackout brass is a bit bizarre.
