Shipping loaded ammo

I need to ship some custom loaded ammo to my buddy for his hunting rifle that he is taking to Texas for a hunting trip. I’m a little confused as to whether I can ship the loaded ammo directly to his work or house. I don’t think it makes a difference, but both him and I are in Michigan. He doesn’t live anywhere near me but I have to manage getting him this ammo. Thanks for your help. I did use the search tool on shipping ammo, but it seems like a lot of confusing and/or conflicting information.

UPS instructions

For most purposes the reference to 49CFR “cartridge, small arms” basically means it does not exceed 50 cal. If you’ve got something funky (reactive projectiles etc…) you may need to do some more research.

Last time I went to fedex, a few weeks ago, they wouldn't ship ammo unless I was a certified shipper. We no longer have a UPS office here, only satellite stores, so no go there

Two months ago UPS shipped ammo , I know because I shipped some through them , just needed the label thats posted above .
FEDEX would not ship it .

This is what I’m thinking. It’s just 40 rounds and they are packed right into two qty 20 round MTM ammo boxes. Like this….

Put some paper wads or foam in the boxes between the cases so they dont rattle. Its no problem shipping thru ups as long as you dont go to a “ups store”. They are not ups and are commies
What about a small flat rate box from USPS?? Btw, they don’t rattle at all because I put paper towel in them for that exact reason

IMPORTANT from Forum BOSS: Dave. M. is suggesting using a USPS BOX, not sending ammo via U.S. Postal service. That would be a FEDERAL CRIME:

AMMUNITION

Small arms ammunition is categorized as explosive materials by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Ammunition that is designed to be fired from a pistol, revolver, rifle, or shotgun, as well as associated primers and blank cartridges (including those designed for tools) and propellant powder for use in any firearm, is prohibited from mailing. Under federal law, it is illegal to send these types of ammunition, domestically or internationally, via the U.S. Mail. Small arms ammunition poses a significant danger to Postal employees, equipment, and customers, and you could be subject to civil penalties and criminal charges, if you send them through USPS.

Thats exactly why I asked the question, I was trying to find out if he was using the box for shipping or if he was actually shipping it through the PO because I didn't want to make an assumption and start railing on him but you deleted my post for some reason, I haven't figured that out yet. But since you are evidently in charge of notifying us what federal law is you might mention it's against federal law to ship using Priority Mail boxes using any method other than Priority Mail.

UPS will ship it, but not from a ups store. You have to do it from a hub. At least here in Phoenix. I have shipped loaded rounds for a match to friends, hotels, ranges etc. Pack it myself (click it clam) print a label and drop it off at the ups hub.
