Shipping a long gun UPDATE

I need to ship a rifle for some work. Haven't done it since the whole FedEx/UPS policy change. Opinions on who and viable insurance should the worst case happen.
I hate Shipping rifles, always nervous about it.
Opinions welcomed.

I need up using USPS. It's the only option we have these days. Otherwise you have to ship through an FFL.

There was a thread a bit ago about rifles lost and guys were out of luck on getting reimbursed. I believe Mr. Wheeler was one.
So, I guess the better question is, who's insurance actually works. Last time I shipped a fairly expensive item through usps and got the appropriate insurance, they said I would need receipts to file a claim for reimbursement. If the Smith I want to send it to was within a 8 hour drive, I'd do it.

If it's a sale, take it to a FFL and have them ship it. It's usually only $10-20 more than shipping yourself. And well worth it.

If you are shipping to a smith to get work done. Use shipmygun.com. If you ship from a FFL, they have to ship back to them. If you ship it, they can send it right back to you.

Last Two I shipped.
Shipped to a FFL. Asked Him You Print the UPS Shipping Label send it to me with a Copy of His FFL.
Boxed Label on Box Copy of FFL in Box.
Dropped Box off at a Staples Store UPS Shipping Site. No Problem...........
FFL Dealer not a easy Guy to work with.

It's not against the law, so you're ok there. But it's against UPS rules, so if you had an issue and needed to file a claim, then they'd probably give you the run around

I use USPS Advantage. Very good rates. You must have an account with them. Very easy to do. Make sure the box is minimum length.
A local paper did a survey on gun loss for fed-x, ups and usps. Fed-x and UPS were tied at 39% loss rate. USPS was at 15%.

Have you ever had to make a claim with FedEx?

These days I don't think an individual can ship a firearm through FedEx. (FedEx rules)

not yet, havent had one lost yet. only issue i've had was the label fell off (my fault) and was stuck someplace for a few days, called them up and they located it right away and sent it on its way.

I just drop it off at the ground hub already labeled. easy to make a label at home and all.

Last couple long guns I sold I just took to my ffl and let them deal with the shipping. Turns out they only charge $35 to ship to another ffl, and I couldn’t do it for that cost myself so it is how I will ship from now on.
