Shippensburg Range Record Broken!

Last Saturday 10/24/2009 at our last official Ground Hog Match under some really nasty conditions (rain/wind/thunder/fog you name it!) Bill Slaterly set a new range record with scores of 50@200 meters, 50@300 meters, and 47@500 meters for a score of 147 out of 150 That's shooting at a 1 1/4 inch ten ring at all yardages folks. That was some fantastic shooting by Bill, not to mention that he won the year end aggregate money in BOTH light and heavy custom classes!
(What happened to factory Bill did you forget it? LOL!)
Again congratulations Bill. I'll let it up to you to share your rifle/caliber/scope/load combinations because I'm sure enquiring minds will want to know more details.

AGAIN CONGRATULATIONS BILL THAT WAS SOME FANTASTIC SHOOTING!

Thank you Dan. Seems like most all my good luck was at Ship this year and I couldn’t be happier. It‘s the same gun & load that shot a 149 and 148 this year at St Thomas and a 145 earlier at Ship. So I knew the gun was able to do it and it was just a question of if the barrel would burn out before all the ducks lined up.

The gun consists of an 8 twist, straight 1.250, 28”, Krieger barrel chambered by Chad McCauslin in a tight body .249” neck 22BR. Action is a dual port Lawton 7500SS that’s just tight enough while still being forgiving to work fast even if you’re sloppy with your bolt like me. Stock is a McMillan Heavy Benchrest. Scope is a Leupold Comp 45 fine that lets me, on most days, see 22 cal holes out there at 540 some yards. All weigh in at near 19lbs with no added weights.

Load’s are made up of bearing surface sorted and pointed 82g Berger BTs that are into the lands. Powder load is 29.7g of Varget with CCI BR primers all in a Lapua case that gets a full body and .0015” tensioned partial neck sizing using a rubber o-ring on a Harrell’s Custom Die that produces next to no bullet runout when seated with a Wilson seater that was made with my reamer.

But I think the biggest advantage I had Saturday was a new Farley CoAx II rest. For those who never shot groundhog matches on Shippensburg’s High Power Silhouette range, the nicest range I’ve ever shot on, there are no sighter targets at 500M. All the sighters are shot at hanging gongs or on the bank well behind the targets. The CoAx allowed me to go back and forth between the gongs that were next to my target fast and without breaking concentration during all those changing conditions. The disadvantage is that the more limited horizontal range of the CoAx meant I had to move the bench to go from the gongs to my other light gun’s target that was in the middle of the rail on another relay.

While I think the 30BR has a slight advantage in score shooting out to 300 yards, and always easier to see hits past 300, the 22BR when used with large 22cal bullets is much more forgiving and way easier to shoot in medium wind conditions. Or for that matter even in bad conditions other than mirage, if you’re having a good day and you can read them.

Hope to see you all again come spring.

Bill

Congratulations Bill !! :)

Apparently that was a long standing range record you broke, and doing it in that lousy weather was all the more impressive.

It couldn't happen to a nicer guy. I only wish I would of made the trip. I was loaded a week ahead of time for the match, but I let the weather scare me away.

I'll see ya next year Bill, nice shooting.
