Ship Action + Barrel to Smith -- How to?

UPS? Last time I used them they destroyed an engraving machine that I shipped. Said it wasn't packaged properly. Kinda funny as I paid them $125. to package it plus shipping cost. It took an attorney to get them to pay.
I guess that we all have our own story. I have had delays during the holidays, but they have all made it by USPS.

USPS currently may depend on the hubs it has to go thru.
I have two packages stuck in NJ since 12/7. Responding to a lost mail search, they are saying the packages are somewhere in a mountain [their words] of packages waiting to be processed.

Bill, I don’t know who your smith is...I’m sure it isn’t too far for ya to take a little trip...

I'm about to send a couple out too. I ordered a 36" hard case that will go inside of a carboard box.

Once I get everything packed up, I'll compare them all online. I have no doubt that FEDEX, UPS and USPS would eventually get there so it will come down to cost.

USPS had big problems before Christmas, but lately seems to have gotten better.

I'm shipping 2 today.
USPS priority with 1k insurance.
Hard case and cardboard box.
All my USPS priority shipping has been on time or ahead of schedule.20210120_074716.jpg20210120_074655.jpg
I need to add some bubble wrap on a few items, will be zip tied at latches.

Where can I find a small hard case that is in a cardboard box, one big enough for a barreled action?

Everything I see seems to be bulk and unboxed.

My guy applauds my packing as "the best he's ever seen" (I'll have pictures later today if you want)

Remove action/barrel from stock.
Cardboard around the trigger assembly

Pack all of that into a 6" PVC pipe with caps on both ends. I got some cheap memory foam pillows for both ends of the tube. Pack the rest of the inside with bubble wrap.

Then I built a cardboard box to fit the tube perfectly out of heavy duty cardboard.

Ship w/ UPS. Full insurance value. Take a lot of pictures in case something bad happens.

UPS and Fedex have regulations for shipping- including disclosure (depending on the carrier)and where you can ship from.
Not that customers care, I get them from UPS- having been shipped at a "UPS Store" instead of a Distribution Center as required by their regulations. I'm not the one that shipped it, so no risk to me.

USPS has no such regulations. Common carriers require no reference to firearms on the package- which is common sense and why I have customers ship with the LLC name on the label and not my DBA.

The case I shipped in came from Amazon
in a cardboard box. $20 delivered.
Cost me $76.50 shipping, should arrive in Virginia on Saturday.

I sent one To Virginia yesterday via FedEx. They asked what was in the box and I said rifle parts. No other questions were asked.

I've started using ups online to print shipping labels. They ask for a 'title' on what's in the box. Put in Rifle Action; scheduled pickup. It was picked up.
