Shilen rachet vs standard?

I’ve read that but is there any accuracy gains?
I doubt it. If it’s a good barrel they tend to shoot good and I’m not sure how much the other stuff matters like groves, or cut vs button rifling. My most accurate barrel is a cut rifling 4 grove krieger barrel and it is very easy to clean usually only requiring a few wet patches before they start to come out completely white but I’m positive there’s a 6 grove shilen or hart barrel that’s as accurate or more accurate than mine but maybe they would take a little bit longer to clean that I’m really not sure about.

Why do people like 5R barrels?
From my meager understanding of that, with this type of rifling you have a land across from a groove and less bullet deformation happens as a result. I've read the Smith and Wesson uses this type of rifling in their handgun barrels. Slugging one of these barrels as I understand requires a V-block, a height gauge and better math skills than I possess.

My mic with a vee groove will measure it.

i stopped by the Shilen booth at least 10 years ago at the NRA show exhibition hall and asked them what the difference was- they said nothing - thats all i could get out of them

And you know what Frank Green (Bartlein) said about the 5R.

I asked them the same question about a year ago and got the same answer.

I have a ratchet barrel on a 20” 223 Service rifle barrel from White Oak Armament. Cleans easy shoots as well as I can. (HM /DR) I have shot my personal bests with this barrel but it is not head and shoulders above the Kreiger or a Wilson I shot prior. I would get another. BamBan Nez likes to melonite these and shoot them forever.

Just like a 5r you can look at the rifling profile against a new crown and clearly see the different rifling profile just like the diagram showed above. They probably say nothing is different so every lgs hangaround doesnt argue with them about how to make barrels
When i see Pokey at Kettlefoot again.. i will be sure to ask him about that

I remember years ago when Shilen first came out with the ratchet rifling. It did not cure cancer and bring world peace then, and I doubt it will now.

Shilen makes great barrels. If you get a great one regardless of the lands and groove configuration, it will be a winner.

through the years, I have seen about every land and groove configuration imaginable come, and go. In my opinion, with all things being equal, it is still hard to beat a regular 4 land and groove.

I have sold a few Shilen's when I had my FFL. They told me the ratchet was more of a demand thing then anything and that the old school benchrest guys still shot the 6 grove at that time. I have a 6 groove and buddy has a 4 groove ratchet. I can't tell a difference in accuracy and both clean easy.

The practical difference for those of us that shoot ARA, PSL or IR50/50 is this - whether you are shooting inside/evening or outside/daytime matches.

Now keep in mind we’re shooting a lead bullet at ~3x less speed, so the wind is a little more contentious especially with a PSL target or to a slightly lesser degree worst edge scoring on an ARA target.

The wind outdoors during non-evening matches is more prevalent and will “catch” more surface area on a 6 groove Lilja, 8 Muller MI or Shilen Octagon than it would using 4 Muller MI or Shilen Rachet. Many top shooters (I am by no means top of anything lol) prescribe to this method and several top end Rimfire gunsmiths will not chamber and fit a 6/8 groove if they know you’re going to use it outdoors during the day time.
