Shilen pre fit on savage problem

I got in a new barrel for my 22-250 and was going to start working on loads for it. Now here is the problem, shilen made the throat way to long. I checked with a hornady OAL gauge to find the distance to the lands. Well with the bullet on the lands there would be only about .003 of the bullet in the case neck. Any one else ran into this problem before?

It happens all the time. You can take the barrel to a smith and have him rechamber it or live with it. Those are your options.

LHsmith I like to try to avoid gunsmiths when I can it cost enough to get barrels chambered for my bat action. I will grab some 69gr and see how the will do.

That problem is why you order a "custom" chamber, cut to YOUR specs! Dummy round, set to the seating depth YOU want. Stuff the bullets into the lands with LOTS of bullet in the neck. You can always go longer with the throat but you can't go shorter.
Start with lighter bullets and as the throat gets longer (and it will), sometimes faster than you expect ( :o) , go to heavier bullets.
"Off the shelf chamber" just don't get it!! Either shoot it the way it is or get rid on it. You may be surprised how well it shoots?

The prefIt barrels that I have Shilen McGowen CBI all seem to try to use a reamer to match the bullet weight that the barrel twist matches
If a person was planning most of his shooting with 55 grain bullet he would go with a 14 or 12 twist.
They assume if you order a 9 twist you plan to shoot a heavier bullet so they use the appropriate reamer

As another poster said probably the 69 gr
Your only choice is to shoot heavier bullets or send it off and re chambered

I am going to have to contact shilen on this because a 75gr VLD will touch the lands but the boat tail part of the bullet is hanging out of the case neck.

Sounds like it's time to switch to another (non VLD) bullet. Try Sierra, Winchester, Nosler, etc.
The VLD takes a short throat as you're finding out. ;)

I'm curious as to why everyone seems to think you have to jam it in the throat to get it to shoot? Especially if your going to shoot critters with it, Benchrest yes but a 22-250? First time you pull it without shooting it and dump a load of powder in your lugs might change that. Second there's no guarantee jamming it will help, I have 204's that need about 50thou of jump before they shoot.

IMHO, if you start with a short throat with the bullets jammed into the lands and it doesn't work for you, you can always go to a jump. If the throat is too long to reach the lands with enough bullet left in the neck, you'll never be able to jam into the lands to see if it shoots.
With a short throat, you can always go deeper but if it's long, you can't go back.
And, the 204 Ruger is notorious for liking a jump to the lands. Nature of the beast. ;)
Also depends on what you plan to do with the rig. Pulled bullets and action area full of powder is something you have to deal with at times. :(

Amen to "the 204 Ruger is notorious for liking a jump to the lands". Not knowing any better I spec'ed my chambering reamer with zero freebore. Could not get the rifle to shoot (Hart 1-12 twist), took it to my gunsmith with a throating reamer I bought from PTG ($66), he lengthened it to .060" and there was a big improvement, with .030" of jump.

Now, I'm thinking more would have been even better. Live and learn.

p.s.: Sounds like that Shilen chamber was cut with enough freebore for the 80 + grain bullets. Too bad the twist is too slow for them.
