I have located a new Shilen chrome moly match barrel in .224 for a great price. If i buy this barrel i will be doing a 22-250AI. The barrel is a straight 1.250. I have heard mixed reviews on the accuracy of these barrels. Keep in mind this isn't there famous stainless super match barrel. Basic Shilen 9 twist. Whats your thought on what i have heard?? Lee

skeetlee: I bought a Shilen CM 1-9 to use when re-barreling my Ruger #1. Have bought close to 12 SS Shilen barrels over the last 13 yrs: all excellent. When the CM arrived, my g'smith called and asked if I wanted to inspect the bore with my 'Hawkeye' before he began his expensive machining. Good thing I did, because I was surprised to see reamer marks across the lands & grooves-- not real bad, but they were there none the less. SS barrels had none, ever. it was immediately returned to Shilen and they contacted me and said they do not lap their CM barrels. They air gaged it, said there was enough dia remaining that they could give it a light lapping,, for an additional $40 charge). They did, it came back, I borescoped, and it was as perfect as the SS. The Ruger #1 is extremly accurate, as long as I don't let the barrel get hot. Had I not had the ability to borescope, it would have copper fouled badly, and probably never met my accuracy requirements, and I'd still be trying to figure out why. Douglas also does not lap their CM barrels. No one has ever explained to me why CM barrels are not normally hand-lapped. Just my experience, hope it helps.

skeetlee,,
Hows it going, I just received my McGowen CM barrel the other day we scoped it and it looks as good as any of my SS shilens, broghtons or kriegers so i called them and ordered another one for a backup barrel on my new 6BR.The nice thing about McGowen the first time you buy a barrel from them they give you a 10% discount off your purchase. I should have bought 2 the first time, but you never know....
$180.00 shipped to your door for 26' 6mm CM lapped and contoured to your spec. they say 3 weeks for delivery it was more like 6 weeks, still fast for a custom barrel.

The CM barrels that are not lapped shoot just as well. It just takes a little longer to break it in. I have used a lot of both lapped and unlapped.
