Shaving a sizing die.

Whether people agree or not doesn't concern me too much. There are many ways to get results and I expect differences. That is part of the great thing about reloading. We get to share our way - without expecting others to adopt it - and they get to share their way - without expecting us to change. Like I said, after 40+ years of loading old brass I have found what works for me. If I hear something I haven't tried I might try it to see if it works for me. Until then we just continue with what we have learned. It's all about the results not about how we get there.

I always have felt if everything is the same the results should be the same .
What I have found that changes results is for you to do thing different . When one say he only sizes Half of the neck and gives his reason why he does . I would listen Larry

Reply to my request/contact from Redding on the shellholder made in the minus direction:

Unfortunately, at this time, we do not offer shellholders in the minus (-) direction. While I cannot promise anything, I would be happy to bring this up at the next staff meeting to see if this is a product that could be introduced at a later date. Thank you very much for your request and have a great day.

Thanks for the input. Ill fire them a few more times and see where it settles in. If i need to i can have a freind who has a machine shop take a few off the shell holder. I was wanting to bump it back for reliability. This is my gun i carry in bear country so reliability is no.1 and accuracy is no.2 it shoots great 5 shots in 1.25" .

If your worried about bears, before hunting take your rifle to a safe place and load each cartridge in the chamber. If it's tight use them for practice. Let us know if a shim solves the problem. One try with a shim any reasonable thickness should answer the question. You probably don't have a problem? To many people read about all the measuring talked about on this website and think it's a requirement for good hunting ammo. From what I read grinding a little off the shell holder isn't a problem even if it doesn't work. Grind 2 thou off the shell holder, turn the die down 2 thou and your back to where you started. No harm done. I adjusted my FL die with Tony Boyers method. No firing pin in the rifle keep turning the die down until the bolt closes with very little pressure. I may be pushing the shoulder back, I don't know, never measured shoulder bump. Don't have gauges. Never had any problems. I assume with the shell holder all the way up in the press it touches the bottom of the die and you still sense the case is still to long?

How? If you remove material from the top of the shell holder and make it thinner you allow the case to be pushed up further into the case unless you take .002 off the shell holder where the case actually sits then you gain nothing.

The .002 you take off the shell holder lets your sizeing die move down .002 close to the bottom of the case with out the sizeing die stopping . That is the same as shorteng the die .002 Larry

This subject has come up many times in the past. I have faced off shell holders and die bases to get the right set back. I contacted Forster on this matter, and they said if you need to shave the die a little to get it to fit, no problem. Barlow
