Sharps rifle

A few years back before everything went crazy, Shiloh used to periodically have a few rifles in inventory. That’s when I bought mine with no wait time. Plus I have enough 45-70 brass to last the rest of my life.
If I were to order one I’d go with a 38-55 or possibly a 40-65. Either would really require casting my own bullets but the reduction in recoil would also mean I could cut the weight down a bit. I’d go with a half round or tapered barrel to make it around 10.5 lbs in order to make it more comfortable to shoot offhand.
Ok guys all good info

Reduction in recoil also means you get to shoot ALOT more. No more buffalo! 6mm for me anymore in centerfire!

Think there is a store up by the factory that carries a number of rifles, new and possibly used. You might find what you are looking for there, instead of waiting probably , a couple of years.

Mine is a Pedersoli. Did have a Shiloh with two barrels, but someone wanted it a lot more than I did.

I would like to do a 45/120 but I would not want to do $6000 to get there. I would prob. look for an older Ruger No.1 and set it up for 45/120. I would sping for color case hardening for sure and some really nice Walnut or Mapple.

I already have a 45/70 and love it. Before the wife got me one for my 34th or 35th Birthday I would never have guessed I would absolutely fall in love with it. It was just a year or two before Marlin sold to the hedge fund that owned Remington as well.

I own a Shiloh 45-70, a C Sharps 45-90 and I have a C sharps 45-100 due in June.
Shiloh has cast receivers C Sharps has billet. My 45-100 is going to be nice at a little over 5K.
Don't get any thing over 45-100 as brass is not being made in any quantity. BertramUSA sometimes gets in 45-110 brass.

My want list I would love own a sharps rifle probably a 45/70 their built in Montana and will interchange with original parts . I went to their website start building my rilfe time I was done I was over $6000 dollars yes it end up being pretty fancy but hell you only live once do I have that kind of monies in my pocket no guess I will have to start saving . Or sell off some of my rifles and I hate to do that yes and probably never will. We shall see . Do anyone of you guys own one of these rifles?
My dad has owned one for years, he took me on a buffalo hunt for my 18th birthday and I used it (Shilo Sharps 45/70) iron sites and all. Took 3 shots to make the thing finally drop, but it happened! Fun piece of history.

Nice shooting nice buffalo also . Very cool !!!

Not really saying anything new here, but if you plan on shooting one much, stick with a 45-70 or a 40-65. Maybe 45-90. Already been mentioned that anything bigger than that, especially with a crescent buttplate ends up being more of a safe queen. Prolonged shooting can be painful without some padding!

The .45-120 was not a Sharp's proprietary cartridge. The .45-120 was started by independant gunsmiths and was never a factory chambering. The .45-110(45X2 7/8) was C. Sharp's longest proprietary cartridge.
My brother and I have .45-110's by C. Sharps Arms and some of what applies to .45-70's won't work in the larger cartridge. We found that GOEX,Pyrodex, etc didn't burn well....we wound using Swiss 1 1/2. Also ,the bullet alloy had to be changed to just a wee bit harder.
Good luck and stay safe.

Good Texas Afternoon, I don't own any "True" Sharps that are made by Shiloh or C Sharps. I do however own several Pedersoli Sharps. (1) 38-55, (2) 45-70's (2) 45-90's, (1) 45-110, (1) 45-120. Two of them I inherited from my dad after his passing earlier this year. After that, I was hooked. I would absolutely love to own a genuine Shiloh Sharps or C-Sharps, but the prices are hefty and the wait time is can be extremely long. I am currently looking for a 45-100 to complete my collection. I have shot all of these rifles at least once and they all shoot great. If I may be so bold, as far as accessories go, the only thing I say is that you do your homework. Also if you choose to use the higher caliers I.E. 45-110, 45-120 ammo is extremely difficult to find and you have to go all the way to Australia to find brass only. I will not even mention the cost. You can find 38-55, 45-70,45-90 online and maybe some at local gunshows.

I haven't started reloading yet, I am waiting for my shed to be finished. I was lucky enough to find 2 boxes of 425gr LDFN from Buffalo Arms and haven't found anymore since. I have about 5lbs of Goex FF, 4lbs of pyrodex. I have purchased some cast bullets already from Montana Bullet Works.

If you do get one I’d suggest a 45-70 if you’re looking at a 45 cal. I have three 45-70s one is a C. Sharps, one is a Pedersoli and one is a modern Win highwall.
The bigger 45s really only make sense if you’re going to shoot long range BPCR comps. For fun shooting there are a number of smaller chamberings that are good shooting with less recoil.

I had one of their Long Range Express rifles in .45-110. Beautiful rifle with lots of upgrades. I put an MVA scope on it and shot 500+ grain paper patched bullets. Had a second barrel in 45-70.

They are a great company and have a very informative website and forum.

I used Swiss 1-1/2F and it was very clean and accurate.

I have a 40-65 and a 45-90. They are fun to shoot. Recoil on the 40-65 is not bad. Full load in the 90 is "noticeable"! But, the 90 is a lighter version purchased specifically for hunting. You don't notice recoil if a bear, deer or elk is in the sights!

I was told about an extremely long range match (1 mile) in western Montana, for the Sharps rifles. Does anyone know when and where this match takes place? I would be an observer. We were in the Big Timber factories a few years back, the folks were very kind. beautiful rifles.
