Setting a selling price

A number of years ago, I bought a Masker PPC rifle with .22 cal. and 6mm Hart from a cousin. Over the years, I've added to the setup and have shot some decent groups with it, but now I'd like to move in a different direction and offer this gun for sale. I'm having trouble setting a value on the gun and accoutrements that would be fair to the buyer as well as to me. I'm aware of gun value books, but since this stuff is specialized, the common ways to set pricing don't seem to work. Does anyone have any thoughts on a workable solution to this admittedly minor problem?

Addition to previous post:
Thanks for the responses--several folks had some good suggestions. Attached are pictures of the PPC rifle and accessories discussed earlier. When I bought this rig from my cousin, he told me it had been built by Seeley Masker, but the action is not stamped as such. I assume that anyone intimately familiar with benchrest rifles would be able to verify the maker. The black painted fiberglass (McMillan) stock did not photograph well, but it's in very good shape with an artistic splash of several colors under the clear. The trigger is a M.J. Canjar 700-LP, with a stamp of 9 84 --Sept. 1984?

There is no serial number showing. The action is bedded and glued in and I didn't want to disturb it to check. The Bald Eagle rests are in almost new condition and the tooling is also in good to very good condition--the setup is complete and ready to make loaded rounds and little holes in paper (or varmints, as desired). There are case trimming tools, resizing dies and the related measuring tools. The barrels are by Hart and there are 2 6mm barrels--one is a Masker and one a Pindell, the third is a Pindell .22 barrel. The barrels are used, but not shot out. There are two bolts, one for the 6mm and one for the .22. I have shot several hundred rounds (mostly .22) and even in my non-expert hands and with my non-expert loads, it shoots one-hole groups at 100 and 200 yds.

The scope that is mounted is a BSA Platinum 36X44 and there is a 36x Leupold with the setup that was recently sent back to Leupold for correction of a minor problem and a general check-over and tuneup. There is a quantity of "once-fired" Lapua and Sako 220 Russian (maybe more than once, but fewer than 4 times) brass, 6mm Rubright bullets and other miscellaneous supplies and measuring tools. Worn out or shot out stuff has been discarded and isn't part of this.

Please feel free to ask, if I haven't covered any important details. Also feel free to request close-up photos of any item of interest. Selling as a lot is probably my preferred way of doing this, but I realize that there is a market for many of the individual items, such as the rest and scopes. I would prefer to sell the rifle, scope and the dedicated tools as a single lot, as this makes the most sense to me.

Yes,find someone that can post pics of exactly what you have. Just ask and there will be quite a few guys to help you out.I would do it,but I am computer illiterate.

Please don't take this wrong...

You said: "I'm having trouble setting a value on the gun and accoutrements that would be fair to the buyer as well as to me."

Setting a price should be based more on what you think a willing buyer would pay (the more you know about that the better off you are). If you can't get that price (the price you want), then either (A) there is no market for what you want to sell, or (B) you've price it too high.

I can certainly appreciate how seller value matters, but the real facts are that things are only worth what a willing buyer will pay - nothing more. I think any seller who can understand that and seperate himself from the equation will have great uccess in pricing and selling.

what would it cost you today to build it.... then subtract the useage an condition

you could start there .

point made above is also true.......
if it doesn't sell " (the price you want), then either (A) there is no market for what you want to sell, or (B) you've price it too high".

just my thought :)

I try to check this web site for rifles that I think are equivalent to mine and check their selling price. I then price my rifle in that neighborhood.

A known shooter will always bring more than a rifle built from the same components that doesn't group well. I have a .22 LR bench rest rifle that is built from quality parts by respected smiths but won't group much better than .45 inches. It isn't worth much even though it is a really nice rifle ;-)

Check the prices on Benchrest Central. Lots of BR type guns are sold there and for the most part the prices are very competitive.

You might try visiting Bob Whites website, "The Shooters Corner" and check out "the list. " Bob's inventory of BR and varmint guns is very extensive, and includes complete rifles from the entire Benchrest era, many built by craftsman like Seely Masker.

Maybe you could post some pictures and ask for a poll in an open forum and then decide if that would be fair. I would bet there would be quite a few willing to help you out. Welcome to the Board.
