Sequence Step for Neck Turning?

You’ve turned too much brass from the case, the dies can’t size the neck back to speck. Since it’s a factory barrel, who knows the diameter...a non turned fired case will get ya close.

since you’ve turn all the brass, you’ll need a tight neck chamber next time to use the brass in.. or scrap it and start over...there’s no need to turn good brass in a factory chamber, just b/c you read it somewhere, doesn’t mean it applies to your discipline

It sounds like the OP is trying to use the same bushing he used prior to turning. After turning, of course the bushing will not size the neck to hold a bullet.

Unless I'm missing something and he doesn't have a neck micrometer, all he has to do is measure some loaded necks and order a bushing .0015" or .0020" or .0030" under his new measurement.

In a factory "unknown" neck, he would be far better to use a FL die, remove expander ball stem and use a .002" under caliber mandrel to set tension. Way cheaper!

So you're using a factory barrel? What exactly are you shooting? Some factory rigs are "OK" but rarely competitive. Sounds like you chasing your tail, to be blunt.

Perhaps a misguided line of thought on my part, but as a relatively new bottleneck loader, I'm looking to get really comfortable and as close as possible to "perfecting" my handloading process and techniques (as measured by finished cartridge consistency and run-out) before I step up to a quasi-custom rig. I know the factory chamber/barrel will absolutely limit results, and I'm okay with that, but if I eliminate the cartridge as a variable (e.g. my process and results), then for sure it comes down to me and the rifle.

BTW, currently shooting 308 out of a factory Rem 700 26" varmint "heavy barrel". I have a McMillan Kestros being built, and will shoot the Rem out of it for a bit. Eventually when I get a couple more bucks, I'll get the action trued along with a little more smithing, and go with a competition barrel for a flatter cartridge, and move into F Open. Based on some results I've seen, currently thinking maybe 6 or 6.5 x 47 Lapua.

Here's a little chuckle - when I thought my 21st Century expander was opening the neck too much, turns out it was the one SMK 168 I was using to check. Grabbed 10 more, and they all had tension. Smack my head! :-)
