semi custom or factory

hello all, i have a few questions i need answered. first i really want another rifle i have always wanted a bolt action varmint gun and have decided to go with .223 becuase i have shot it and kinda know what it can do. so my question is can any short action rifle be converted into a .223. my thinkin on this is i would like to buy a used short action rifle preferably remington but mainly what i can find at the time and biuld a very accurate .223 for yotes. could this be done cheaperthan buying a brand new rifle like the rem sps varmint.
any info or suggestions on this would really be helpfull i think i may end up with about 6-700$ for this project including glass, but who knows with a wife a 2 kids this could end up being changed. thanks ahead of time for any remarks.
J

In my humble opinion it is cheaper to find a good factory rifle that meets your needs and tune it. If one assembles components ones self, save for barreling the action) it will run one about $1200 - $1500 to put a good rifle together. Try and find a used rifle in good shape and glass-bed the action, float the barrel, check the engagement of the lugs, adjust or re-work the trigger, polish and/or lap the barrel and work up a load. Reloading or shooting a crap-load of different factory loads, start with Federal Premium) is the single best and cheapest way to improve a rifles accuracy. There are some really great factory rifles out there these days.

Any short action will work for the .223, but you'll need to deal with the bolt face if it's anything other than the small face... A good used action and a custom barrel is your best bet.. I wouldn't hold my breath hoping a factory Remington would shoot as good as a custom barrel install........ It may not be as cheap in the long run, but the look on your face after shooting a custom rifle is worth the price.

Savage makes some good rifles and barrels. Way better than Rem. You can change barrels and bolt heads easily if you wanted to change calibers. You could get a model 12 with the target action and a bull barrel. Look them up, you'll be glad you did.

CZ kevlar Varmint is accurate as Hell in a .223 I have one, I think new they are about $700 Retail. It is Pillar bedded, a light set trigger, floating Varmint barrel, and A Solid Kevar composit stock.,I think it is a Bell a Carlson?)There are several write-ups on it, and you can expect 1/4 moa at 100 yards with light bullets and light wind.
You don't need to do anything to it other than buy it and shoot it.

ok so i looked at the savage it is a good lookin rifle, but a little more than i can afford, but thanks anyhow. i suppose what i really want is a rem 700 sps tactical with the short barrel, sorry i should have said that to begin with, any other suggestion would be helpfull thanks.

I would look at the CZ also. I have a CZ american I recently aquired, and really like it. This is my first 223 I haven't started loading for it yet, just shooting Black hills blue box 40 v-maxes and it shoots 3/4' groups as long as I don't let the barrel get hot. Look into the CZ varmint.

hey just got done lookin at that rifle, not bad lookin but not for me, the wood is nice but i do not like it when it gets scratched or messed up. thanks anyhow

i think i may have found what i am looking for in the stevens 22 short action. is there anybody who might be able to tell me about this rifle, such as is it a savge rifle under another name or what, and also about the accuracy good bad or what?
