Selling Our Public Lands

This is a perfect example of why real estate is a great investment. -- They aint making any more of it. Sooner or later, even a worthless patch of scab-rock in Stinking Desert Orevada starts looking valuable to somebody.
A lot of us westerners have been pretty spoiled, living our lives with thousands of square miles of public lands nearby for a playground. Now, the gummint needs MORE MONEY for various reasons, and that land is starting to look like a bank account.

A lot of these lands used to be money making property with timber and grazing contracts, but lately, logging and cows have become evil and destructive and need to be done away with.

The companies who used to make a fortune on timber, also provided a fortune in timber revenue that got spent on roads, schools, recreation, etc. When it came to an end (for various and often stupid reasons) many small rural towns - and ranches - and mills - dried up and died.

Now the patch of timber that provided thousands of board feet of lumber, several jobs, and a great place for many hunting camps and other recreation, is likely to be sold off to someone with several million bucks, and a hobby herd of buffler. jd

This is just the beginning. I'm glad we bought our land when we did. No one wanted it because it had no power or water and was to far from town. Now 1 million for a 2.5 acre lot for the view. I don't know where they get the money but they do. And people everywhere with power and water. It does not take long to develop. Land is still a bargain in the western states that is not developed and out of the city limits.

I look at it this way… not every parcel government has bought was a good thing for the environment, rare, threatened, endangered species, taxpayer, etc. Lots of political reasons to buy land in the government world.

For example, say a government land management agency buys 400 acres of good land, good investment to buffer and protect a river. But if you want that 400 acres, you also have to buy this 100 acres of Acid Mine Drainage abandoned coal mine. That agency should sell the mine site, even give it away. Land preservation really means “we buy it but will do nothing to maintain it” much too often.

I withhold judgement until I see what is being sold. I’m hopeful Old Faithful will not be on Zillow.

I guess you guys out west who have enjoyed shooting and enjoying all of the public lands may have to do what we eastern schmucks have been doing for decades. Either lease the hunting rights or buy it. I was amazed how much property sold for in some of the western states. Land that, my uncle the farmer used to say, wouldn't raise a hard on. :D

I bought 70 acres of cutover here in NC 6 years ago for $425 an acre. I replanted it in trees, have a nice 900 yard range, as well as deer, turkey, a dove field, the occasional bear, and two creeks where we shoot ducks every fall. Taxes run about $50 a year as we have it listed as a tree farm. We had to submit a management plan with a 80 year hardwood rotation. I'll be long gone by then. :p

I imagine a lot of the land up for potential sale will be BLM lands.

As the government sells or leases this new property, it will no longer be available to the public for use, and when investment company's or Corporations acquire it, they will have the clout to acquire infrastructure to access the areas by whatever means necessary. In other words, Eminent Domain on a wholesale level. When the government sells land, it will never again belong to the American Citizens.

Theres alot of speculation already on this.
Be careful of all the " coulds" and " mights" click baits for sure.
Everything i trust says old military base property that hasn't or never will be used is what the talk is about.

Too many videos out there that say it's not all about military base property.

It's already not available for public use lots of the time, You can't use it because a tortoise or a Kangaroo rat might get offended. This country really hasn't been free for a long time, You have to ask permission to do anything, (Get a Permit).

The reason we have so many forest fires is because we keep people and animals out of the forest, Grazing and responsible logging would eliminate overgrowth of the forests, But instead we protect a Kangaroo rat and a spotted owl, I guess it's better that he be burned out of his burrow.

Developers will buy it, no matter what is on it. Then people will buy the houses they build on it. People want elbow room as they retire. There are a lot of people with money that want out of the urban sprawl. They need room for all their toys and family members or rentals for income. The worst is that there will be no infrastructure.

Read the bill instead of listening to people who are selling clicks and subscribers to there podcasts.
While I'm not a fan of the meateater watch his interview with Sen. Tim Sheehy.

And alot of the media thats selling this did the same in 2016 and the last 4 years that spun alot of lies and fear.
This is not about old military bases or forest fires. This sell-off is about hundreds of thousands of acres of land of all types. It is also typically not about places where individuals want to build a house. When "Open space" is cut up, there is no true Open Space left. The areas reserved for special creatures is a small dot on the map, so it isn't about that. This sell off is about special interest groups making a lot of money.

What do you think they are going to do with this land? You don't think they will develop this land at some point? Or sell it to some one who will develop it anyway they can. It does not have to be houses. It's also foreign factories and any other way those special interest groups want to make money. It's not about an individuals building a house, it's about building thousands of houses. It's happening now in AZ. And we don't have the water to support that growth, but they don't care. In Az it's illegal to stop a developer from building a tract of hundreds of houses because of lack of water. The LAW states that they can haul water if the ground water dries up. That's the law. Where they are going to haul it from is beyond me. That is insane and that is what is happening. That's pretty short term thinking so they must know some thing we don't. It's treason to speak up and I don't understand why there is no outrage from the people that this will impact the most. It seems like if it was the 60's , people would be burning down these insane housing developments if they knew the impact they are going to have on their future. Maybe that's why the Government legalizes pot. Seems like a scene from a MAD magazine.

What ever happened to We the People ?

Aside ,16 miles west of me a 160 farm sold for 17,000 $$$$ an acre last year.

Anyone see where the value of the dollar is headed ?

A permit has little to do with permission, it has everything to do with another form of revenue generation and most people don't realize it's just another tax like so many others. Anything that is paid to a government regardless what they call it, is a tax.

I read through this thread and it appears only one person may have actually read the measure. Most of the comments are way off base as to what the measure is about, although I find their feelings about selling off our public lands spot on.

Read the measure and you'll understand it is about housing development, the states have first right of refusal, and if you read it carefully you'll also notice how it's been worded. After noticing some of the irregularities one might think it's simply poorly written, but history has shown it is written as intended and not for the good of the average citizen but rather for developers.

The draft Senate legislative text, proposed amendment to the Energy and Natural Resources Act.

Attached is a doc that points out some of these, and asks some pointed questions.
