Self defense and target reloading for pistols

With the shortage of bullets, I tried a guy's pistol bullets I met at an IDPA match, great Christian man, dedicated reloader and hunter, making pistol bullets of the highest caliber. I tested some in 5 gallon water jugs with some amazing results in penetration and expansion.

9mm-130g HP-7.6g of AA#7- expanded to 69 caliber

45 ACP- 200g hp- 8.0g of AA#5

Looking into an Abyss of a HP- 89-92 caliber Expansion

40 S&W-180g HP

All of these bullets are very, very accurate! At least the accuracy of the very best of the jacketed bullets!

Rare to meet a man with as much as dedication to the product as he has with his customers. He lives his life like his good name is worth more than Gold and Silver!

Please for the sake of your freedom, NEVER carry reloaded ammo for self defense. It can be a totally good shoot, and the scumbag attorney for the plaintive/or the family of, will paint the picture that you used these bullet with the premeditation to do excessive harm, damage or death. The next thing you know, you will be on trial defending your actions.
always carry factory defense ammo. The major manufactures all have teams of lawyers of retainer just for the reason I just described.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

Well with the shortages of factory ammo now, it would be a great argument for hand loads..... wouldn't it? My favorite load for defense is a hollow base wadcutter loaded back wards over 3 gr. of Bullseye, plus it is very accurate and expansion in a 38 is the size of a quarter ...... jim

If you use reloaded ammunition for defense and the party is injured or killed. You give the attorneys one more reason to show you had full intent too kill and not defend. Don't give them anymore than they will come up with to convict you as the bad guy.

Depends on the state laws. In SC, if a person is in the process a felony, ammo you use is of no consequence, they can not sue you, nor their relatives

Posts like the above show how state law from state to state can vary GREATLY!!!

Also, Castle Law from state to state can be dramatically different.

The above bullets would be shown to NOT over penetrate, huge safety concern.

Gun writers being paid by ammo makers started that "hand loads will get you in trouble", myth about 20 years ago. It doesn't happen. If you can document a single case I will eat my words. A good shoot doesn't become a bad shoot based on the tools used. In that case a 44Mag would also fall into the same category if someone argues that 9MM is the most that is "fair". Total MYTH.

As far as the OP's post. I'm so glad to hear that there are still Honorable Men out there doing business the old fashioned way and producing superior products at reasonable prices. Good on him, and on you for patronizing his products.

Pretty much what Massad Ayoob said...in several of his books. Since he also served as expert witness in quite a few firearm related cases, I assume he knows what he's talking about.

I got a cast bullet maker about 10 miles from me, going tomorrow to pick up a few things.

Just my uninformed 2 cents. Wouldn't buying ammunition be considered premeditated? Like others have said, I have read and heard the same thing. Guess the perp is more dead with handloads.

What 1shot said. NEVER use handloads for home or self defense. You may end up being the bad guy. Just my two cents Tommy Mc
So the Hornady XTP bullet in their factory load is less deadly than the Hornady XTP bullet in my handload?

The intent is not the question, the need is the question. Did you need to defend your life or someone else's life?

Any half witted college graduate can point out the scientific data demonstrating near identical lethalitof in closecquarter shootings of cartridges from 380 auto to 45 ACP regardless of ammo. Only silly people on gun forums or YouTube argue those points.

I too have always been told to never use hand loads for self defense for the reasons stated prior.
If I HAVE to use my weapon in self defence, I do not want to take any chance of getting sued or ending up with a room mate named Bubba who wants to call me baby.
Factory loads for me.

I put the post up there on bullet expansion for those that will not be able to get factory ammo, or for those that want to practice with extremely accurate bullets.

The ammo shortage is not about to let up anytime soon.

In the state of SC, if a crazy person is trying to kill you or someone else, and you happen to shoot their balls off, they NOR their relatives can not sue you for making them dickless.

Don't depend on what you read in some magazine, know your particular state laws and make prudent decisions accordingly. Also, it is comforting to know what your local police dept is using for ammo, You could copy the cops. Even in times were ammo is plentiful, you can not purchase that POLICE quality ammo, Federal HST and Winchester PDX-1 ammo has been very hard to get at times.

Police quality ammo??? The state police shoot 6 yds..... my heavy barrel S&W 4" 38 with a hollow base wadcutter and 3 gr. of bullseye will shoot them in a small hole that close..... LOL.... jim

Yep, we use to get reloaded ammo for police practice if you had the cases it cost 50 cents a box for 38 wad cutters...... jim
