Secret to make a Nosler AB shoot in a 280 AI

I always had great results with the 160 AB on paper and game, but switched to the 175 LR version last year after testing them. My 280ai shot them better than Bergers and with more velocity with RL 26. 2 different 7 saums also shot them well. On wet newspaper test at 100 yards the 175 LR went thru 24” bundle. The Berger 175 elite hunter only made it half way and was nothing left but small pieces of jacket. At 400 the the ablr had the most penetration and weight retention. 180 Berger hyb was next and 180 vld 3rd, 175 elite hunter last. The bullet in the picture at 400 was in wet newspaper. The 600 yard was in home made ballistic gel 19” long with fresh elk hide on both sides with some body parts in between. Found bullet in the hide on back side. Never recovered one from elk we shot even at over 600 yards . None on there feet for more than 30 yards. It’s the best bullet I have found that’s tough for close shots and still had a good BC for long range. They shoot better than the 160 ab I used to shoot, especially out past 1000 yd.

Good looking shrooms ! Especially the 600

I have bagged numerous elk and know 5 elk guides. Shot placement is #1 and bullet choice is #2 for me and these guides. Many clients shoot poorly (especially those with a gun that they can't handle the recoil). 4 of these guides carry 7mm Remington Magnums and one a .300 Win Mag. I and they recommend a gun you can carry and shoot. The ELD-X and Noslers (AB and Partitions) are well liked. I have taken several with a .284 Winchester and 150 grain partitions. I would use a 160 but I have a Ruger 77 (short action) and the longer bullet eats too much case space.

Give Reloader 17 a shot. I'm using it in my SA 284 and moving a 160 NP at 3000 fps. Great accuracy and no worries on barrel life as it's a hunting rifle. No pressure signs either. Great set up. I shoot 162/168s the same velocity and they all fit in a SA Bottom metal magazine. Those are max weight bullets for the SA.

I built my 284 on a long action so I did not limit myself on bullet seating. My new barrel likes both H4350 and H4831SC with the 162 ELD-X and the Nosler 160 AB. It shoots H1000 great but velocity is too slow. It also loves the 180g HVLD from Berger. This bullet groups the best but I guess we would expect that. Now to shoot the 300 Win again and verify load with new scope that is freshly mounted.

I have a few pounds of RL26 but I think it will be too slow for the 284 case. I'll pick up some RL17 and give it a whirl. Your velocities are better than mine.

I started using it in my LA 284 with the 180 class bullets. My velocities were just touching 3000 fps. Accuracy was best around 2975. I shot that gun alot and turned out barrel life was very good out to 1470+ rounds. Still maintained 1 moa behind that and still used for a hunting rifle. I don't shoot it hardly since building the SA 284. For what I typically shoot here and a few other places I hunt, this SA 284 with 160 class bullets gets it done. RE26 powder does shoot week in the 284 but I ran out of it before I could really see what it could do velocity/accuracy wise. Worked well in my 260 and 22-250AI also.

Hi. First time here. I would like to share these with you. The barrel has sadly been shot out but has a Bartlein on it now that I haven't gotten around to fiddle with. As always, start low on powder charge. Thank you.
