Second time not as good as First.

To the original poster "boyscout". The only reason that I innocently asked if neck sizing was an option and suggested you try it was because you said that you FL resized before your second try and I wanted to take that out of the equation to see if maybe (?)on some small chance that you had some issue such as undersized, out of round, or improperly adjusted FL die. Mistakes in manufacturing are made every day.

I certainly did not mean to bring on the insuing debate on FL vs NS and its effect on accuracy. That is something you'll have to try and decide for yourself if you want to.

Since then, you have posted asking about Varget being temperature stable..... I'm not touching that with a 10ft pole. As far as I'll go with that answer is..... I quit using it 5 or 6 years ago, but there are shooters out there that love the stuff. WD

Listen to roger folks, he has been there and done that. Lots of neck tension is needed and i would also trim my brass so it is all the same. Lee

I would say the same thing happen to me with new brass. When fire forming Dasher brass i did not anneal after the first firing and i had erratic neck tension and this was cured by annealing. The neck tension dropped and was very uniform after annealing. Polishing the inside helps also, but i only use .001 nt.......jim

WOW Boyscout, this really stirred the pot.I am also fairly new to the 6br,so I was fascinated with the replys. When someone mentions 32grs,I get scared, but I wish WyleWD said what he was using if not Varget.Happy shooting and You'll soon be a 6mm junkie.

I can think of 2 reasons.
When you used virgin brass, there was no soot, carbon, unburnt powder on the neck, so your case likely had more neck tension from the extra stiction of the once fired brass, probably increased the velocity enough to take you out of the node you were in.
Another possibility is that a lot of barrels get a velocity increase at around 150 rounds plus or minus. Could it be that your barrel got the velocity kick at about the same time as you got to reload all your fired cases?

Rvn1968' he did say he was using 32gn of target, but was this with 95gn pills or 107s.

A little confusion,I DID NOT say that I would ever endorse a 32gr load. Also I am shooting 105's or 107's 90% of the time. I have yet to try the 95's. Please no wars that would waste the moderator's time....Let us all have a Happy Holiday with small groups.

Is it OK if I disagree with everyone? Just kidding. I have a theory and it is ONLY a theory. QuickLoad says to measure case capacity using a FIRED case. I think this is because the case INSTANTLY swells to fit the chamber. Therefore it doesn't matter whether you f/l size or not.
It is just a theory of mine and y'all are welcome to prove me wrong.

The case does swell to the dimensions of the chamber, that's the reason I told him to increase powder charge by 0.1 gr. at a time until accuracy returned. In my 284 Winchester it takes 0.5 gr. more to reach the same speed with once fired brass than with virgin brass. I expand, turn, and then resize the neck on my virgin brass so neck tension is the same with new brass as it is with used brass, so I rule out neck tension in my case.

Erik, I measured base to shoulder on all my new .284 Win brass, then set the f/l die to size all the cases to the dimension of the shortest measured case. After returning to my motorhome after shooting with you, I measured base to shoulder on the fired cases and found they had grown .005" So I will re-adjust my f/l die to bump the shoulders .001".
BTW, I f/l size everything I shoot, every time. And I recently started annealing after every time - for consistency, especially neck tension.

I absolutely was not trying to "stir the pot", just trying to learn. Thank you everyone for your input and suggestions. I love the passion you all clearly have for the sport. I have passion- i lack knowledge.

I know Roger and he is one of the greats in the sport and a true gentleman and true to his word,so believe him,he has actually done it all.Extremely knowledgeble .

to the OP....I hope u get the bugs outa your ammo....these guns will make you pull out your hair/or turn it grey....if you can get the vertical out of the loads ...then the horizontal is up to you......I am fortunate to have shot lots of disciplines and many places around the country.....and am very glad to have good friends like Wayne and Jon....you shure learn a lot about life and yourself at the range....Roger

Erik

I have had to do the same as you after fireing new brass and raise powder as mauch as 1 gr

to those of you who are talking about neck tesion once you load your bullet how do you know your tension is the same? or at what point in the reloading process are you seeing tension is not the same?
