Seb rest bags, which sand is best?

I have a couple of front rest bags that need sand, what is everyone using?
I only want to buy once and move on.

Lizard sand works fine and is readily available at pet stores like Petsmart.

I use fine paver sand in the front bag

I bought "Heavy Sand" in a small quantity (8 pound Powder type jug) from Bob White at The Shooters Corner, for my bags. Did have a use for a 50 or 100 pound bag of sand, or even a 25.

Like anything else shooting related, choice of bag sand depends on the shooter and the discipline the front rest is being used for. I prefer my front rest bag being just a little bit soft. Not floppy soft, just not hard. My reasoning for this, if hard is better, people would just use a 2x4 for a front rest. My rifle doesn’t bounce around on a softer front bag.

I use either beach sand or 00 or 000 sandblasting sand. I was told never to use heavy sand for the front bag because it compacts and will have a tendency to throw shots. Same with the rear bag. Was told you can use it in the main body but never in the ears.

Since I live 6 miles from the Atlantic ocean and store some sand toys here at the house for when my granddaughter and my daughter visits, I guess I will have to drive to the beach today with a little plastic bucket and shovel. I have a Brand New SEB NEO sitting on the floor of my gun room waiting to be assembled and I check my stash of Bob White sand and remembered I gave what I had left to a friend.

I started with just heavy sand but I found it packed really hard and I had a little 'jump' of the muzzle. Following suggestions I saw on this board I mixed Parakeet gravel with my heavy sand (50/50) and the bag settled in a better shape and the jump is absent.

I would drive to Home Depot and get paver sand

For the little amount that is needed for a front bag, beach sand works fine. You can run it thru a small screen if u want. Please enlighten me about the contaminated beach sand. I need a good laugh after today. Maybe a radioactive whale could of washed up on the beach and if you used the sand, your front bag might glow in the dark.

I doubt if anyone is going to glow in the dark, salt water has all kinds of weird stuff in it IME from living ocean front for several years.
Oils, seaweed particles, dead critter guts. Your bag might turn green and start to stink, who knows but hey if money is tight then make your own choice, a trip to the beach is always nice.

For myself paver sand is super cheap.

Oils, seaweed particles, dead critter guts. Your bag might turn green and start to stink, who knows but hey if money is tight then make your own choice, a trip to the beach is always nice.

I've used beach sand in most of my front bags and never had a single problem.

I've never had a problem with it and I've been using it for 7 seasons now. Like I said for the little amount that is used and since Bob lives right near the ocean it's a no brainer. I can understand if you don't live near a beach then it would be cheaper to buy it.

We weren't talking about rear bags. The question he asked was what to use in the front rest bag.
