SEB Mini X vs Sinclair Competition Rest?

I know that they are different styles of rest, but I’m thinking about them. I currently have the Sinclair Competition rest and it is a really great rest for my Benchrest style shooting. I only shoot club type matches and for fun, no serious matches, but I am serious about my shooting, so the rest is very important to me.

The Sinclair rest works great, stays put when I shoot off it, however it is very heavy, approaching 40 pounds with the bag and accessories. I’m in my mid 70’s and have a very bad back, for which I take all sorts of pain medications. Lugging the Sinclair rest from my car to the shooting line is becoming increasingly difficult. There are days that I really struggle with it.

I was looking at the SEB mini X and it appears to be a very nice rest and also appears to be a lot lighter. So I was thinking that perhaps it might be time for a switch to a lighter rest.

I was wondering though how a lighter rest like the mini is with a heavier Benchrest rifle. I also have never shot off a joystick rest before, so I’m wondering how that would be.

I’d love to hear from anyone that may have made such a change, or can offer me some information on how the mini is with heavier rifles.

Thanks,

Scott

Scott,

I recently traded my one piece Arnold rest for a Seb Mini X with someone on this forum for the same reason. Not having to pack the not just heavy, but bulky rest and risk sending my back into spasms has resulted in me shooting more often. The Arnold was a great rest but I am enjoying shooting off the Seb just as much. I'm still getting used to the joystick, but I like it. So far I've only shot my heavy custom and old 40X rimfires off it but with a Protektor rear bag, it is solid as a rock. I suspect it will be fine with centerfire too. I like the way the top on the Mini X will adjust down to approximately 1.5 inches wide so it looks like it can support sportster width rifles too. That's a nice bonus.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Mini or Mini X. I give it two thumbs up!

I have a Mini X with the Seb 6" top. I have had a 22lb gun on mine, and it easily handles it. Setting up the Mini X is a breeze with its rotating top that locks down tight after set up. I had a beautiful Sinclair Comp. with all the F&C upgrades......I let it go for the same reason you are talking about....I DO miss it, I DON'T miss hauling it around. The Mini X will serve you well.

Regards
Rick

I would advise trying several before investing. They do not work for me I have tried several on different occasions. They move from a to b quickly but getting them to the exact spot my brain wants actually make them not as quick as my S C.

Thank you all for your responses, they do help. I’m thinking that I’m going to try a joystick rest to see if I like it before I do anything. No one has a SEB anything at our club, only Rodzilla’s, Farley’s and a few of Butch’s Shadetree’s, but I’ll just try one of those to see how it goes. I really like my Sinclair rest though, just wish it was not so damn heavy.

Hi Scott,
Thank you for your interest in the Mini-X.
I would recommend you to first try a joystick rest (any) with your rifle. There should be some joystick rests that you could loan in your area? You will know exactly what you want or if the joystick style rest suits you well or not from there.
Cheers,
seb

Thank you so much for chiming in sir. I agree with you and that is exactly what I’m going to do.

Mini-x with my F/open guns holds position perfectly fine. I also switched from a windage rest to a joystick. I like to dial my wind and it has been a bit of a learning curve for me, though it's going well and didn't take long to get used to it.

Sold my Farley and got a Mini X. Would never go back. The rest Seb's son makes is also great for SB F-Class. I got my start with a Shade Tree top and Grizzley bottom and stayed with Joysticks ever since

I use both, the Sinclair with the F&C base and speed screw in BR, and a SEB Mini in F open with a sub 22lb rifle. Both are excellent. I don’t notice any issue with the joystick, it works great. And if it’s not for you, you could sell it on here in a flash.

This is another option, designed by SEB’s son:

I’m waiting on this very option now. I ordered a Trident last week. I looked at the Seb but was apprehensive about the price and the wait time. I watched f class John’s video testing the trident and that done it for me. I’m just shooting club matches but I’m serious when I do it. I’m excited about trying it out.
