Seating the Berger 109 gr Hybrid Target for Long Jumps

After careful CBTO measurements with the bullets on the lands, I determined that my SAAMI chambered Howa 6mm Creedmoor barreled action handloads were going to have to be seated with a LONG jump in order to fit in the magazine (COAL). Rather than window the magazine, or order a short freebore barrel, I conducted a jump ladder test witht he Berger 109gr, shooting 21 different jump lengths (3 shots each, 63 shots total) in 0.005" increments. The largest jump was 0.165" which is huge by normal standards.

The good news is, as advertised, the Berger hybrid likes long jumps to the lands, even really long ones. My test results are here:

So if you are seeing the same thing trying to load Berger 109gr Hybrid Target bullets close to the lands, fret not because you do not need to. In fact there are advantages to loading longer jumps.

Nice article and great test! Long jumping bullets really interests me and I like to see data and testing done like this. Great job.

I’m curious to know what the velocity average would be comparing the shortest jump to the longest jump.

Great Article! I commend you, Sir. I have struggled greatly finding accurate windows from the magazine. This piece confirms what many have said but few have put to the test.

I really like those plots! That really helps a person wrap their head around barrel and vibration timing.

Glad you enjoyed the blog post. I enjoyed the test as well, and the results were what I had hoped for, that at some jump level, that fit in the magazine, I would find a broad node with good group sizes. I would encourage you to read the Precision Rifle Blog article I linked to in that article. It is well written and goes into much more detail.

Jud96 I believe the answer to your question is covered in the article I linked to in my blog post.

Thanks for the post and the article! Impressive testing...

I am about to test some Berger Hybrid Target bullets for my short action 6.5 mm PRC rifle and I am glad to see that good results can be obtained for long jumps for the Hybrid Target bullets. Hopefully I can post some good results as well on the forum...
