seating die for 45-70?

I have an RCBS die set for 45-70, but I find that when seating 480 gr smitzer bullets, the seating die cannot accommodate the long length of those bullets without damaging the sharp point. Any thoughts on the best seating die to use, one which will handle the large bullets?

I don't know about "smitzer" bullets but most standard 45-70 dies come with a seating stem that is made for round or, flat tipped bullets. When using the newer pointed bullets a different seating stem would be needed.

I have used a drill press to relieve the area of the bullet tip in the seating stem. Use caution to watch how the bullets contacts the stem.

I shoot a 45/70 with a modified Lee 459-500-3R. I trimmed the base to make a 400 grain bullet. peep sights 1/2 moa at 100 yards sub sonic.

Is this the bullet you are shooting https://www.midwayusa.com/product/9...grain-lead-schmittzer-spg-lubricant-box-of-50

PM me about a seater stem.

Thanks for responses, at the match this morning a friend who is a retired machinist (with a home shop) offered to make a modified stem, if I bring a bullet in to him, he will match the profile. So, once again, better lucky than smart!
